Luck Companies’ Abel Parker has been named NSSGA’s 2012 James M. Christie Safety & Health Professional of the Year. Established in 1987, the award provides national recognition to an individual who has made superior and substantial contributions to his or her company’s as well as the industry’s efforts toward proactive safe and healthful operating practices. The award presentation is scheduled as part of National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association’s (NSSGA) Annual Honors Awards Ceremony on March 18 at NSSGA’s 2013 Annual Convention in San Antonio.
Parker serves as risk and regulatory affairs manager for Luck Companies, where he has worked for more than a decade. Under his guidance, Luck Companies has helped forge efforts to boost compliance and adherence to the highest principles of worker safety and health. Parker has supported the company’s effort toward safety and health as evidenced by the company’s very low injury incidence rate of just 1.32 injuries per 200,000 hours worked (industry average was 2.27). He has also contributed to leading behavior-based safety programs and has spread his efforts to help the broader industry.
Parker has helped set up a visible emissions workshop for the Virginia Transportation Construction Association and has supported and hosted Noise & Dust workshops for NSSGA. He has been an active member of NSSGA’s Safety and Health Committee, as well as a member of the MSHA-NSSGA Alliance Committee, which works to develop practical programs for education and training on behalf of occupational safety and health.
“Abel’s achievements stand as a clear illustration of our industry’s commitment to eliminate injuries and fatalities in support of one of our most important guiding principles: to prevent all occupational injuries and illnesses,” said NSSGA Chairman of the Board of Directors Ron Summers, CalPortland Co. “He is a credit to Luck Companies, and I know that our industry is a better one in which to work because of Abel’s commitment.”
“Abel’s professionalism, experience and concern for the health and safety of all aggregate workers are great examples of the spirit of the James M. Christie Safety & Health Professional of the Year Award,” added NSSGA President and CEO R. A. Edwards, III. “He has made a substantial impact not only on his company and workforce, but also on workers and companies throughout the country.”
