Volvo
Improved fuel efficiency
Volvo Construction Equipment’s new L350F model
wheel loader offers improvements on nearly all aspects of its
predecessor, the L3330E model wheel loader. The flagship machine —
introduced at Bauma 2007 — features much higher productivity than the
outgoing L330E, ultimately resulting in much-improved fuel efficiency,
according to Volvo. The improvements, the company says, are a
combination of the L350F’s new Tier 3/Stage III Volvo engine, stronger
hydraulics, and a new transmission with lock-up and new axles.
The new model also is fitted with a larger cab, which features a larger, air-conditioned interior that is insulated from noise, dust, and vibration — the latter thanks to viscous cab mounts and air suspended seat. The cab also meets ISO requirements.
Ingersoll Rand
High breakout force
The WL-350 and the WL-440 compact wheel loaders
from Ingersoll Rand Compact feature a high breakout force that enables
both pieces of equipment to function as tool carries by maintaining a
load position that is parallel to the ground throughout the lifting
range. The breakout force of the WL-350 is 10,128 pounds, and the
breakout force of the WL-440 is 12,730 pounds. The 60-horsepower WL-350
has an operating weight of 11,240 pounds and bucket size of 1.2 cubic
yards. The 73-horsepower WL-440 has an operating weight of 13,230 pounds
and a 1.4-cubic-yard bucket.
Hydrostatic drivetrain technology controls variable speeds within two speed ranges — 0 to 4 mph and 0 to 13 mph. A transverse-mounted engine and hydraulic pump at the rear of the wheel loaders provide a high static tipping load while maintaining their compact size, according to the manufacturer. The WL-350 tipping load straight is 11,731 pounds, and tipping load articulated is 10,352 pounds. The WL-440 tipping load straight is 14,620 pounds, and tipping load articulated is 12,900 pounds. The wheel loaders come standard with a hydraulic quick coupler system. Available attachments and optional equipment include forks, light material buckets, side-dump buckets, high-tip buckets, multi-purpose buckets, high-speed travel packages, and electrical tank refilling pumps.
Caterpillar Inc.
Loader turns into dozer
The Multi-Terrain Loader (MTL) from
Caterpillar
Inc. has angle blades and dozer blades available as additions to turn
the machine into a mini dozer for conditions such as soft, muddy
underfoot conditions, sloped terrain, and sensitive surfaces. The MTLs
can also give operators access to areas where a larger machine would not
be a practical choice for moving dirt, gravel, snow, and other materials
or leveling the worksite in finish grading applications, according to
the manufacturer. The angle blade features a bolt-on, curved moldboard,
common back interface structure, and three height conditions to
accommodate specific dozing requirements or tire arrangements.
The dozer blades incorporate a rugged track-type tractor variable power angle tilt blade that has simultaneous tile and angle capabilities for superior control and maneuverability, according to Cat.
Lemac Corp.
Strategic bearings arrangement
The Lemac Excavator Grapples from Lemac Corp. come in a variety of styles including heavy duty, medium duty, and trash handling. Heavy tube sections form the upper side of the jaws providing a solid base for both ear groups. The ears are constructed of heavy-duty alloy steel to ensure a maintained rigidity between the massive jaws. To keep the “muscular metal” together, heat-treated alloy steel main pins are used. To protect against rigorous use, a strategic arrangement of bearings, seals, O-rings, and collars in the main pivot are used to guard this area. Large-diameter alloy steel also is used for the stay arm pins. The entire jaw structure is manufactured of quenched and tempered alloy steel 130,000-psi minimum yield (not tensile) 360 to 440 BHN. The tine tips are 175,000-psi with a minimum yield of 450 to 550 BHN.
Sweepster
Dust control without water
Sweepster’s VS Pick-Up Sweeper with Vacuum Dust
Abatement for skid-steer loaders offers dust control without the need
for water systems, which require constant refilling. The sweeper’s
washable PFTE-coated filter is able to filter dust as small as 10
micron, and its drape system seals the sweeping chamber to the ground.
The machine’s high-volume fan operates at 1,700 rpm to pull air from the
sweeping chamber filleting the dust and exhausting clean air. A 12-volt
shaker controlled by the operator cleans the filter. Other features
include a “volumizing” feature for more debris volume and less
re-circulation, quick-change and 26-inch diameter brushes, a high-dump
design, and a general-purpose, light-material bucket with a bolt-on
cutting edge.
A heavy-duty front caster wheel comes standard. Optional features include various controls for the electric shaker and single- or dual-gutter brooms for cleaning the curb and gutter. The patent-pending sweeper comes in 60-, 72-, and 84-inch models and has several applications including utility worksite cleanup; pavement milling operations; construction site cleanup; street, curb, and gutter cleanup; and parking lot cleanup.

Leading Edge Attachments
Faster than a hammer
Leading Edge Attachments Inc. has introduced a
new and improved version of its High-Capacity Multi-Ripper Bucket.
According to the company, it has replaced hammers, blasting, and rock
trenchers for less money and is four times faster than a hammer. The new
bucket operates on the same principal as its predecessor, but the design
has been improved to allow more capacity with stronger tooth mounting
and longer-lasting teeth. The bucket uses the patent-pending SHARC (SHanks
on an ARC) technology, which functions similarly to that of a trench
except a hydraulic excavation action is used to rip. The staggered
ripper teeth fracture the substrate in sequential order so that the
rolling of the bucket by extending the bucket cylinder always provides
maximum breakout force applied sequentially to each tooth, which results
in flat ripped sides and bottom surfaces.
