‘Smart’ Three-Deck Screen Debuts
Metso Minerals says it designed the
new Lokotrack ST458 mobile screen for applications involving high
capacity, accuracy, and mobility. It features large (18- by 5-foot)
screens with 85 square feet of screen area per deck and the end-to-end
crowning of the two-bearing screen boxes enables a high-performance
screening result, according to the company. Performance is also enhanced
by the screens’ ability to use both forward and reverse movements.
The ST458 employs Metso’s SmartScreen technology, which uses the computing power of the company’s proprietary intelligent controlling system. SmartScreen is said to sense the load on the main conveyor and monitor screen functions, automatically adjusting key parameters such as feeding and screening speeds when necessary. Metso says this ability to control the screens’ functions in real-time results in continuous, high-quality, high-capacity screening.

New hammer for secondary breaking
Atlas Copco’s new 5,500-pound HB
2500 hydraulic breaker features Krupp technology in an attachment
engineered for rock mining and secondary breaking, as well as demolition
and tunneling. Designed for carriers in the 29 to 43 metric ton range,
the HB 2500 can accept up to 58 gallons-per-minute hydraulic flow at
2,610 psi of pressure, and
delivers an impact rate of 550 blows per minute. It features PowerAdapt, a proprietary new system that shuts down the breaker if it receives excessive oil pressure from the carrier, preventing damage to the breaker from oil flow complications that can arise when attaching the breaker to different carriers.
The unit also features AutoControl, a monitoring system that allows the breaker to adapt its frequency and power output to match operating conditions. It begins by firing the first stroke at half power to create a pilot notch that will center the working tool and prevent slippage. It then adjusts the power output to match the density of the material, reducing shock on both the breaker and the carrier and increasing service life.

Big loader gets new power
Caterpillar has taken its 990 wheel
loader to the H-Series with the addition of a new Tier 3-compliant,
27-liter, 12-cylinder engine that produces 627 net horsepower. The 990H
is an aggressive face and bank loader designed to efficiently load 60-
to 70-ton trucks in the standard lift arrangement, and 100-ton trucks in
the high-lift arrangement. Cat says its proprietary engine technology
reduces emissions while boosting performance and increasing component
life. The company has also improved the operator area, including
reducing in-cab noise levels to less than 75 dB(A).

Web-based vibration monitoring
InstaLink, Instantel’s newest vibration monitoring solution, uses the Internet to automate the process of transferring vibration data directly from an Instantel vibration monitor to a secure, password-protected Web site for viewing by approved personnel. The new system uses the company’s Auto Call Home automated call-in feature to allow monitors to send data through a variety of modems to a PC; InstaLink then forwards the data to the secure InstaLink database. The company designed the new system for projects with time-sensitive reporting requirements and for sites that have many monitoring points.

Scale monitoring software
PC Scale has developed a Scale Monitoring Module that helps producers audit scale activity by logging ticketed and non-ticketed weighments, ensuring that all traffic crossing the scale is legitimate and that no vehicles cross the scale without a weighment being captured.

Makes operators more efficient
Topcon says its new 3DXi GPS+ grade
reference provides reliable grade control for excavators anywhere on any
work site, eliminating over-excavation, minimizing material waste, and
increasing profitability. The system features four sensors that measure
angles from cab, boom, stick, and bucket to create a precise cut every
time, Topcon says. The 3DXi system includes two GPS+ antennae, a GPS+
receiver, and the GX-60 control box. Topcon says it is easy to install
and operate.

New blasting system
Davey Bickford says its new
Daveytronic Wireless Blasting System allows blasting technicians to
remotely detonate single or multiple shots from up to one mile away from
the pattern. The company says this range significantly improves safety
and exceeds minimum distance requirements. The system allows the blast
engineer to configure blasting machines in a master-slave configuration,
using the remote trigger software. Modems — one for the master blasting
machine, and one for each slave — are required for communication between
the master and slave machines. For safety, the system’s communication
protocol is protected by a Cyclic Redundancy Check to assure a high
level of data integrity.

Topcon says its positioning system has successfully tracked signals from the first Galileo test satellite, making it the first company to successfully track GNSSD signals from all currently available satellites with production instruments. The ability to track signals from Russia’s new satellite constellation in addition to the other two established constellations is expected to improve the usefulness of GPS systems in places where signals are difficult to receive, including quarries.
