Dyno Nobel, Ensign-Bickford to Merge
Dyno Nobel ASA and Ensign-Bickford Industries, Inc., (EBI) recently signed a letter of intent to merge their explosives capabilities. The merger of EBIs commercial explosive initiation systems businesses with Dyno Nobel, subject to completion of a definitive agreement, due diligence and various regulatory processes, is expected to close in the second half of 2002. The merged company will have annual revenues of almost USD 900 million and operate in 36 countries. The corporate headquarters of the merged company will be based in Oslo, Norway, under the leadership of Dag Mejdell as chief executive officer.
Microdrive offers dependability
Rockwell Automation offers the Reliance MD60 microdrive for variable-speed applications, such as material handling, fans, and pumps. The MD60 drive offers V/Hz operation from
1/4 to 5 hp. The drives are available in 115V AC, 230V AC, and 460V AC ratings. The drive features a built-in LED display and keypad. An IP20 enclosure comes standard, with an option to modify with a NEMA 1 kit addition. The drive also features internal dynamic brake circuitry for use with externally mounted resistors.

Drum motors offer safe operation
Van der Graaf, Inc., offers explosion-proof internally powered drum motors for driving belt conveyors. The low-profile motors feature heavy-duty bolts, a cast iron end cap, and a secondary o-ring seal for complete hermetic sealing. The 12.5-in. diameter drum motors feature cast iron external components (shell and shaft) that resist corrosion and contamination. The conveyor drive has a 30-hp motor and a standard face width of 51 in. Drum speeds are fixed at 600 ft. per minute.
Screen plant offers high mobility
Finlay Hydrascreens USA, Inc., offers the 653 compact, direct-feed screen, a mobile, maneuverable plant that sets up quickly and can function as a primary unit or be fed from a portable crushing plant. Standard equipment includes a 4- x 10-ft. top deck and a 4- x 8-ft. bottom deck. The screen also features a 32-in. main conveyor to the screen, one 40-in. and two 26-in. on-board stockpiling conveyors, and a 68-hp Deutz air-cooled diesel engine. The screen is available in track-mounted or wheel-mounted configuration.
New website expanded
Hitachi Construction offers an expanded and enhanced website www.hitachiconstruction.com. The site is designed to reflect the integration of Hitachi and John Deere sales and marketing, information systems, and customer support. A new feature of the site, Customer Personal Service, provides links to various online services. Another section provides online product brochures. A future option will be the ability to configure an excavator with options, such as a particular boom, arm, or shoe, then send it to a dealer for a quote.
MSHA offers multimedia training
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) released an interactive multimedia training program. Haul Road and Dump Site Berms is a DVD-based safety-training program that addresses specific hazards and preventive measures associated with surface haul road and dump site accidents and fatalities. Videos, still photos, and discussion topics identify critical surface haulage safety information. Also included on the DVD are best practices and safety tips, federal standards and policies, and a 10-question multiple choice quiz to evaluate the programs effectiveness with each user.
Modular plants offer flexibility
Telsmith, Inc., an Astec company, introduces its modular plant systems, which cut setup time and offer greater production flexibility. Telsmith modular plants can contain any traditional plant component and are designed with formed steel construction. By plugging in different standard modules for different needs, greater numbers of specialized materials can be processed. Virtually any plant type can be designed as a modular plant, according to the manufacturer. Equipment options include primary and secondary crushers, feeders, vibrating screens, washing plants, conveyors necessary to make multiple products, and a variety of automated control packages.
Truck improves productivity, lowers costs
Caterpillars 740 Ejector Articulated Truck features a self-cleaning ejector mechanism that allows material to be spread and dumped without raising the body. The truck is rated at 42 tons and produces net power of 415 hp. It incorporates all the features of the 740 articulated truck, including a new electronically controlled engine and transmission, plus a new suspension system, hitch design, rear-mounted cooling systems, and center-mounted cab.
Improved series of breakers
Breaker Technology, Inc., introduces the TB-XC series of boxed housing breakers. New features include a 10-percent reduction in weight; a suspended boxed housing design that reduces noise and vibration to the carrier; and a breaker body suspended on all sides using compressed polyurethane isolators. The nose of the breaker is surrounded with abrasion-resistant plating. The TB-XC series of breakers are available from the TB725XC (2,000 ft. lb. class) up to the TB2580XC (13,500 ft. lb. class).
Conveyors for various applications
Grasan offers stationary truss and channel frame conveyors in 24- to 60-in. belt widths and lengths from 25 to 500 ft. The conveyors have engineered drives and options such as walkways, covers, and support legs. Standard truss main frames are 36 in. deep and are all jig welded. Truss sections are through-bolted for extra strength. For long spans between supports, Grasan can furnish 48- to 60-in. deep trusses with extra heavy chord angles. Standard truss conveyors use a 20-in. diameter, rubber-lagged drive pulley with tapered bushings; wing-type tail pulley tensioned with top angle protected screw takeups; a 1.15 service factor TEFC electric motor; totally enclosed drive guard; drive nip guards; and tail pulley guards.
