Residents in Brookfield, Wisconsin, are gathering signatures for a petition against a proposed quarry rehabilitation plan that includes filling the former quarry with clean fill, according to a report from Brookfield Now .
Residents at Regal Crest Village Apartments created the petition, “Brookfield Residents Against Dumping,” and said they are accepting signatures through Friday.
Super Excavators has offered to purchase to 85-acre property from The Quarry Group Joint Venture, adding that it would fill the quarry with up to 1.8 million cubic yards of soil and waste from Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) projects.
The rehabilitated land would eventually be used as a city park and for multifamily housing.
In a meeting with the company last week, residents expressed concerns about the project’s effects on groundwater, home sales, wildlife and wetlands. Residents also said they were worried about dust and noise levels.
Super Excavators assured residents the noise levels would not be as big a nuisance as they expect. Trucks would travel in and out of the former quarry between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. and operators would be prohibited from banging truck gates, engine braking or creating noise in excess of 60 decibels.
As for the wildlife and wetlands, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said “no rare or threatened plants and wildlife would be affected.” The DNR also promised to regulate the area if necessary.
The city has plans to schedule a public hearing to allow residents to give more feedback about the rehabilitation plan.
