Volvo offers 10 models of crawler excavators with an operating weight range from 12 tons to 70 tons with breakout forces from 19,000 pounds to 80,000 pounds.

The C-Series excavator line has the more powerful Tier 3-certified Volvo engines, delivering exemplary fuel efficiency. These engines have been united with intelligent hydraulics, and a more rugged undercarriage and superstructure — but that is only half the story. The operator’s environment, already class-leading with the B-Series, has been substantially upgraded, giving operators more comfort, more space, a better climate, better visibility and improved controls that are easier to use. Put these elements together, along with simplified servicing and monitoring, and the C-Series offers a high production, maximum-uptime machine.

These Tier 3 engines have V-ACT (Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology), which provides high torque at low revs, leading to ultra-efficient fuel consumption. Impossible to stall, the onboard computer balances maximum available power to hydraulic output, preventing the engine from becoming overloaded (regardless of engine speed or pump demand).

See the changes, feel the changes

The B-Series was instrumental in establishing Volvo Construction Equipment as a leading player in the global excavator market. The C-Series is set to take that success to a new level. The primary, at-a-glance improvements include:

CareTrack now standard. Volvo now offers CareTrack, its state-of-the-art telematics system, on all machines over 12 tons with a three-year customer service subscription. CareTrack is used to manage a machine’s productivity and maximize its availability for work. Using GPRS (mobile network) or satellite technology to send information, data is available securely and instantaneously to any remote online connection.

Advanced hydraulic flow. With boom, arm and swing priority. In-cab, operator-selectable hydraulic flow and pressure increases performance, especially when regularly changing attachments. Highly responsive for fast cycle times. Hydraulically driven fan only operational when needed, reducing fuel consumption further.

Better controls, more space, more glass, less noise, less vibration. A larger Volvo Care Cab offers more room where operators really need it, with particular attention given to allowing plenty of space for big site boots to work without restriction. Visibility is also much improved — especially upper and lower visibility. Multi-adjustable seat, pedals and joystick offer the perfect operating position. The enhanced suspension system surpasses emerging cab vibration requirements, reducing operator fatigue and whole body vibration. In-cab noise levels are also reduced, thanks to the low revving engine, redesign of the cooling system and to the pressurized insulated cab itself, which blocks sound. A new color LCD display is easy to read, also in very bright conditions and offers real-time information.

Class-leading climate control. The electronic climate control comforts the body with the highest capacity heating and cooling ventilation system of any rival excavator.

Safer. ROPS cab. All steps and platforms feature punched steel plates for superior grip. The new windshield wiper cleans a wider area — including both upper corners. An optional rear-view camera provides a safer view while slewing or during travel.

Easier to service. Ground-level access makes inspection and service convenient, straightforward and safer. Centralized lubrication points and long service intervals reduce downtime. An LCD monitor conducts a self-diagnostic check routine for maximum uptime.

More rugged. Strengthened high tensile steel undercarriage frame absorbs stress with rigid strength. Reliable, reinforced, doubled-welded boom and arm offer capacity, reach and force. Sealed-for-life greased track link prevents leaks, reduces noise and ensures longevity. Protected hydraulic lines and bolt shields prevent collision damage.

Parts commonality. The C-Series shares over 100 components found on other Volvo equipment, including the wheeled excavators. This ensures an increased level of parts availability when you need them the most.

Environmental awareness. 95 percent of a C-Series Volvo excavator can be recycled. External sound levels are also greatly reduced. External paint is lead-free.

With the launch of the C-Series excavators, Volvo demonstrates once again that it builds more care and quality into its machines. Care for the machine owner, care for the operator, care for the service technician and care for the environment around it.

Volvo Construction Equipment was the first manufacturer to introduce an articulated hauler to the industry. Today, Volvo E-Series articulated haulers are the world’s first hauler to offer a suspension system with automatic leveling and stability control on all wheels.

Volvo Construction Equipment continues its domination in the design of articulated haulers. The Volvo E-Series features more power and more capacity. The line includes seven models, ranging in capacity from the 26.5-ton A25E to the 43-ton A40E. All are equipped with Tier 3-certified V-ACT (Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology) Volvo engines that offer high torque at low revolutions to maintain fuel efficiency and reduce noise levels and increase engine life. Power and torque have been increased in the Volvo-designed-and-built D16D engines of the A40E and A40E FS with a power increase of 12 percent and torque increase of 19 percent. The Volvo A35E and Volvo A35E FS generate the equivalent power and torque of the now-replaced Volvo A40D articulated hauler.

Volvo E-Series designed for power and fuel efficiency

The Volvo A35E, Volvo 35E FS, Volvo A40E, and Volvo A40E FS are also equipped with a fully automatic nine-speed fast adaptive transmission. Shafts, planetary gears and bearings are all engineered to handle the high torque produced by larger engines. An optimized gear-shifting pattern has a precise overlap of ratios to provide constant power transfer. These models also have new frames, axles, and a new single-speed drop box with longitudinal differential and 100 percent lockup to reduce power losses and improve traction and fuel efficiency. Automatic Traction Control is equipped as standard. They are also fitted with more powerful exhaust brakes and retarders, and the cooling systems have been improved to eliminate the need for additional supplemental cooling in hot climates.

The Volvo A35E and Volvo A40E are equipped with all-wheel wet disc brakes for improved stopping power and longer service life, and both carry larger body designs for easier loading and more capacity. A high dumping joint and long overhand gives the operator the ability to dump into hoppers or over an edge.

Several body advancements are also available on the Volvo A25E and Volvo A30E haulers — and are also available on the larger platform machines. These include a bolt-on light materials kit that increases hauler body volume, suitable when hauling low density materials. Heavy-duty wear plates are also offered as are linkage-operated overhung tailgates.

Full suspension, first in industry

The Volvo-engineered full suspension (FS) machine provides extraordinary off-road performance, empty or full, allowing the hauler to travel at much higher speeds — increasing productivity. When traveling empty, return trips are substantially faster due to the smooth ride and the ability to traverse the toughest conditions.

Even when fully loaded, the Volvo E-Series haulers’ ability to float over rough ground without bouncing and rolling improves operator comfort and safety.

The Volvo FS system is not your normal hydro-pneumatic system that frequents the market. This innovation incorporates automatic leveling and stability control that is computer-controlled and then corrected by each hydraulic cylinder fitted to each wheel. The Volvo FS system has automatic leveling and stability control on all wheels and, instead of traditional rubber suspension, a hydraulic cylinder is fitted to each wheel. The system constantly monitors the load and ground conditions, adapting the suspension to fit prevailing conditions, absorbing rough spots and giving a smooth and stable ride with minimal bouncing, rolling or shaking.

This design also improves safety by providing significantly more ground contact. Vibration levels are considerably lower than in conventional machines, and because of the smoother ride, operators experience less fatigue, and efficiency and productivity increase exponentially.

The operator environment

Volvo E-Series articulated haulers are built with a world-class operator environment. Simplified retarder controls and exhaust brakes require less operator input; combined with easier-to-read Contronics information, this allows the operator more time to concentrate on what is going on outside the cab. Automatic traction control is standard on the Volvo A25E and the Volvo A30E for even more simplified operation. Longitudinal differential locks are applied automatically depending on conditions at hand; this allows the operator to focus even more on material delivery.

CareTrack telematics standard

CareTrack is Volvo Construction Equipment’s state-of-the-art telematics system used to manage a machine’s productivity and maximize its availability for work. Using GPRS (mobile network) or satellite technology to send information, data is available securely and instantaneously to any remote online connection. CareTrack is now standard on all machines 12 tons and over. In addition, Volvo provides a 36-month CareTrack service subscription at no additional cost.

Caterpillar Work Tools B.V. has introduced its new line of P200-series pulverizers for hydraulic excavators. The P200-series, model P215, P225, and P235 extend the range of hydro-mechanical work tools.

“The new line of pulverizers is yet another advancement as we continually expand and enhance our portfolio of solutions to offer more effective and efficient attachments to a broader range of contractors, says David Becktel, commercial manager of Caterpillar Work Tools, in a press statement issued at Bauma 2010. “We continually seek opportunities to respond to customers’ needs and are fully committed to being a reliable, global supplier and technology leader.”

Ideal for pulverizing from non-fixed structures
The P200 series works well as an option for recyclers who need to prepare concrete for fine crushing and is an excellent attachment for secondary demolition. Concrete chunks released during the demolition of concrete structures can be fine-crushed at source. In this process the concrete and the reinforcement are separated. This considerably reduces the transport volume, saving dumping and transportation expenses.

Innovative jaw arrangement
The P200 series offers wide jaws with pick-up tips, large opening, reversible cutting edges and fast closing times that bring a high return on your investment. This high force-to-weight work tool has been specially developed to reduce the largest possible amount of concrete in the shortest possible time.

Enhanced performance
The hydraulic concrete pulverizer is a highly productive pulverizer. The ripper tooth splits concrete instantly and the large number of crusher teeth have a large pulverizing effect. The cylinder of the P200 series is equipped with a speed valve as standard. This device controls the speed of the cylinder and enables to cut/pulverize with great force in short cycle times.

With a mounting bracket this tool can be exchanged among several carriers and in combination with the dedicated CW quick coupler a swap between other Cat work tools can happen in a matter of seconds.

Optimized serviceability
Service and repairs are necessary part of operating any work tool. So the less time and money needed for both, the better. That’s why Caterpillar gives major attention to reducing both. The teeth and blades are replaceable and the hydraulics are easily accessible through bolted hatches. Parts commonality is designed into the P200 products to significantly benefit owners of several work tools.

The new 156,043-pound (70,780 kg) Cat 374D hydraulic excavator showcased at Bauma 2010, a direct replacement for the model 365C, combines added horsepower, stronger hydraulics, new buckets and greater operating weight to boost trenching, loading and lifting capabilities.

Complementing these design basics are undercarriage improvements, operator-convenience features, safety enhancements and serviceability improvements. The new fuel-efficient 374D is designed to deliver reliable, low-cost operation and long-life durability for optimum customer value, according to Cat.

More power, capable hydraulics
Rated at 476 horsepower (355 kW), the 374D’s Cat C15 ACERT engine produces 18 percent more power than does its 365C predecessor. The C15 engine features advanced electronic control, precise fuel delivery and refined air management for optimum performance, fuel-efficiency and emissions-compliance, the manufacturer says.

The C15′s torque characteristics allow the engine to deliver full power at maximum rpm, resulting in efficient hydraulic-pump operation and enhanced hydraulic response.

A titanium-alloy compressor wheel in the C15′s turbocharger increases reliability and performance at higher altitudes, and the hydraulically driven, variable-speed cooling fan reduces engine load and saves fuel, according to Cat.

The 374D’s implement hydraulic system provides a 10-percent percent increase in hydraulic flow, with a similar resulting gain in hydraulic horsepower. The added hydraulic power combines with larger digging-arm and bucket cylinders to yield 17 percent higher digging forces with the standard (reach) boom-and-arm configuration. For 374D units equipped with the mass-excavation configuration, a larger digging-arm cylinder increases force by 17 percent.

Also new in the 374D’s implement hydraulic circuits are electrically controlled regeneration valves, which assure positive response from the boom and digging-arm cylinders. The resulting benefits include shorter cycle times and estimated fuel savings of more than 2 percent.

Buckets, undercarriage, serviceability
A new line of buckets for the 374D are designed for added strength and durability to accommodate the higher digging forces of the new machine. Bucket types include models for general duty, heavy duty, severe duty and extreme duty. Work tools for the 374D extend the machine’s application into such operations as demolition, scrap processing and quarry work.

Undercarriage improvements include redesigned track links that operate with less stress, forged idlers for improved durability, improved carrier-rollers and a 6-inch (160-mm) track- gauge increase to promote added stability. In addition, the carbody (the structure mounting the machine upper to the track assemblies) has been reinforced at the track-frame interface. For added protection, heavy-duty guards enclose the bottom of the machine.

To facilitate routine maintenance, the 374D provides protected fluid-drain ports and self-contained hoses, spin-on filters, integral pre-cleaner in the air cleaner (with electronic restriction sensing), testing ports in all pressure circuits and pressurized fluid-sampling ports to assure reliable samples. Cooler cores provide ample clearance for cleaning,

Also, the Electronic Power Control is now located in the air-cleaner compartment, allowing the cab floor to be washed without risk of damage to the EPC, although the EPC and electrical terminals are weather-proof. For the operator’s convenience, fluid levels can be checked electronically at start-up.

Operator comfort and safety
For the operator’s convenience and comfort, the height of the joystick consoles is now adjustable, and the response of the joystick control levers can be adjusted to the operator’s preference through the monitor. The control-pattern changer allows operators to select preferred lever functions.

The monitor provides a full-color graphic display with comprehensive machine information (including fuel-consumption) presented in either an English or ISO format. The monitor also displays images from the optional rear-view camera.

To diminish heat and noise in the cab, the hydraulic control valve, pumps and reservoir are positioned away from the operator’s station. Metal-grating catwalks, 20 inches (500 mm) wide, are located on each side of the upper structure to provide safe access to maintenance points. The rear window, made of tempered glass, can be removed as a secondary exit.

Standard halogen lights provide exceptional jobsite illumination, but can be replaced with optional High Intensity Gas lights on the boom, and upper cab if more illumination is required. Lights are time-delayed to allow safe exit from the machine at night. As an added safety measure, travel, swing and implement functions are locked out when the counterweight-removal system is activated.

At Bauma 2010, Atlas Copco introduced three new heavy-hydraulic breaker models with PowerAdapt and optimized power-to-weight ratio.

The HB 2000 — with its service weight of 2000 kg – offers 10-percent more power than its predecessor, the HB 200. The new HB 3100 and HB 4700 with a service weight of 3100 and 4700 kg, respectively, deliver 5 percent and 13 percent more power than their predecessor models.

In doing so, Atlas Copco sticks to the principle of developing and building attachments offering an improved power-to-weight ratio. The same performance can be achieved with a smaller attachment and carrier unit. Investment and maintenance costs are reduced. More power also means a higher strain against which the attachments are protected by proven and new product features.

All three hydraulic breakers are equipped with the PowerAdapt system which shuts down the breaker in case the oil pressure is too high.

Torsten Treger, product line manager medium & heavy breakers for Atlas Copco, says this feature is particularly useful when the hydraulic breaker is used on different carrier units.

“Hydraulic breakers can generally be hydraulically overloaded if the carrier’s oil pressure has the wrong setting,” Treger says in a written statement. “In order to ensure that our customers can make full use of the equipment in terms of efficiency and power, we have equipped the entire range of heavy-duty hydraulic breakers with PowerAdapt.”

With an improper carrier oil pressure setting, conventional pressure relief valves as the ones frequently used in hydraulic breakers continuously drain oil into the tank and therefore waste precious energy. This affects the efficiency and profitability of the equipment.

The improved guide system of the hydraulic breakers provides a better stability and resistance.

“After all hydraulic breakers are subject to tough operating conditions,“ Treger adds in the press release. “A new retaining bar provides a better protection especially in the lower part of the hydraulic breaker which has to take a lot of wear and tear. The service window and the recesses for the lateral slewing screw couplings have been reinforced. The Non-Dust version of the three new breaker models are furnished with the all-round wear protection which all of the dust versions of the HB series of hydraulic breakers already feature.”

All proven features of Atlas Copco’s heavy-duty hydraulic breaker line are also found in the three new models: the VibroSilenced System to protect operators against noise and vibrations, AutoControl to adapt the blow frequency and impact energy to the rock hardness as well as the integrated automatic lubrication system ContiLube II. With StartSelect the operator can influence the starting and shutdown behaviour of the hydraulic breaker. And with the optional DustProtector the hydraulic breaker is protected against dust and rock particles penetrating the lower breaker part.

Cummins Inc. revealed on April 19 at the Bauma show the latest generation of its 4-cylinder QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 engines offering a simplified Tier 4 installation across a broad 75- to 160-hp (56-119 kW) power range.

With an air-intake-to-exhaust aftertreatment system specifically designed for highly flexible machine integration, the 3.3-liter and 4.5-liter QSB engines will lead the way for compact equipment to more easily meet low-emissions regulations in 2012, Cummins says.

The 4-cylinder QSB engines operate as integrated Tier 4 emissions systems with Cummins Compact Catalyst exhaust aftertreatment, shown for the first time at Bauma.

Introduced for EPA Tier 4 Interim and EU Stage IIIB off-highway applications, the catalyst removes particulate matter (PM) by simple, flow through passive oxidation. With a smaller size than other types of aftertreatment, the Cummins Compact Catalyst can be installed in space-constrained equipment with the added flexibility of mounting separately from the exhaust muffler, or as part of a combined catalyst-and-muffler unit.

With no impact on equipment operation, the catalyst offers a robust and maintenance-free “fit and forget” solution, ideally suited for the rental-equipment market, according to the manufacturer.

Compared with Tier 3 applications, the QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 engines can achieve up to 5 percent improved fuel efficiency for Tier 4, depending on duty cycle.

Cleaner, more fuel-efficient combustion is achieved with a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system to reduce Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions. Extensively proven on Cummins 6-cylinder engines, the EGR system is scaled down for the 4-cylinder QSB configuration and driven by a variable-flow turbocharger. Using a simple variable turbine mechanism, the turbo improves boost across a wider engine speed than a wastegate turbo and avoids the complexity of dual turbochargers.

“By focusing on design simplicity, the 4-cylinder QSB engines reflect the need to maximize installation flexibility for Tier 4 compact equipment,” said Hugh Foden, executive director for Cummins Off-Highway Business in a press release.

“The Tier 3 QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 have earned an enviable reputation for durability and power productivity,” Foden continued. “Now, with the Cummins Compact Catalyst and upgraded performance systems, we are able to achieve low emissions without compromising the ability of these engines to perform at the highest load factors or in the toughest applications where they excel today.”

Equipment manufacturers looking to power a wide range of machines will benefit from Tier 4 installation commonality provided by the 4-cylinder QSB engines. The QSB3.3 extends across the 75- to 110-hp (56-82 kW) range, while the QSB4.5 extends from 110 hp to 160 hp (82-119 kW). For ratings up to 173 hp (129 kW), the larger 6-cylinder QSB6.7 engine will also be available with the Cummins Compact Catalyst.

The engines retain the impressive peak torque characteristics of the previous Tier 3 versions, with 306 lb-ft (415 N•m) peak torque available for the top-rated Tier 4 Interim QSB3.3 and 466 lb-ft (632 N•m) for the top-rated Tier 4 Interim QSB4.5.

Cummins Compact Catalyst

The Cummins Compact Catalyst represents the latest evolution of Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) aftertreatment, manufactured by Cummins Emission Solutions for over 15 years. The maintenance-free catalyst provides the installation simplicity needed for Tier 4 Interim and Stage IIIB engines below 174 hp (130 kW).

The Cummins Compact Catalyst achieves efficient PM reduction with a catalytic coating and substrate uniquely tailored to the QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 engines. By passively oxidizing PM from the exhaust stream with the simplicity of a small flow-through catalyst, Cummins is able to achieve Tier 4 emissions levels without compromising engine transient response or reliability.

Building On Proven Platforms

The Tier 4 Interim QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 engines build on the proven success of their Tier 3 predecessors by retaining the same displacement and base engine platform that has established an enviable reputation for durability even in the toughest applications.

The QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 engines were 4-cylinder pioneers in the use of a High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel system with advanced electronic management. This early advantage and experience at Tier 3 now pays dividends for the Tier 4 engine with surprisingly few engine changes needed to achieve low emissions.

The previous wastegate turbocharger is upgraded to a more efficient variable flow turbocharger to drive the EGR system and optimize boost across a wider engine speed.

The variable flow design ensures a simplicity and reliability appropriate for 4-cylinder engines. At low engine speed, the exhaust gas flow is directed to increase boost pressure – acting like a small turbocharger. At high engine speed, the flow is directed to retain the most efficient boost level – acting like a larger turbocharger.

Engine management capabilities of the QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 are upgraded to the latest CM2250 Electronic Control Module (ECM), sharing a common electronic architecture with more powerful Cummins Tier 4 engines. The control module provides three times faster processing and double the memory compared with the Tier 3 module.

The CM2250 module controls a performance-enhanced HPCR fuel system with fast power delivery and low-noise operation. The module also provides a seamless electronic interface to other systems on the equipment.

Engine cooling for the QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 incorporates a stronger drive fan system with auto-tensioning capability. Together with increased water pump flow rates, this will further enhance reliability and help mitigate demands on equipment cooling.

Direct Flow Air Intake

The QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 engines are integrated with the new Direct Flow air cleaner from Cummins Filtration, specifically developed to provide more performance in less space for Tier 4 applications.

Increased dust-holding capacity enables the Direct Flow technology to reduce air cleaner installation space claim compared with conventional cylindrical air cleaners, while achieving equal or better filtration performance. This is achieved by the innovative “V-Block” rectangular configuration of the Direct Flow, which optimizes space normally wasted in the inner diameter of round air filter elements.

The Direct Flow housing features an integral sensor for monitoring temperature and pressure to ensure that optimum airflow is delivered to the engine during all operating conditions. The housing is available with an optional precleaner cover that is able to remove up to 95 percent of particles before they reach the filter, offering significant benefits for high-dust environments. With enhanced filtration efficiency, Direct Flow offers the opportunity to extend filter service intervals and reduce operating costs.
