Your complete guide to new and updated equipment and supplies in the aggregates industry.

Continuous level sensor

BinMaster Level Controls says its new SmartBob-TS1 continuous level measurement and inventory monitoring sensor is designed to prevent the ingression of dust into the electronics cavity to protect critical components and enhance durability. The sensor can be used to measure powders or granular materials in bins, tanks, and silos up to 60-feet tall. It offers a variety of communication options including an optional built-in 900 MHz wireless modem, ZigBee compatibility, RS-485 communications, and 4-20 mA output to a PLC or human machine interface. Individual bin measurements can be sent to the eBob PC software or a control console where measurements can be displayed as distance to product, height of product, and percent full.

V-belt tracking system

ASGCO’s dual-return Tru-Trainer conveyor belt tracker is now available for v-return conveyor systems, such as high-tension overland conveyor systems, which operate with wide conveyor belts to accommodate heavy loads. An external central pivot mechanism was designed, eliminating the need for a single, large drum, and enabling a concentric and balanced rotation, which extends bearing life.

Sets new standards in reliability

ITT Corp. says its new Goulds XHD extra-heavy-duty, world-class lined slurry pump is a next-generation product that will enable mines to move slurry with improved reliability and at a lower operating cost. The pump is designed to be maintained even while running and to require less downtime for servicing. Features include an adjustable suction seal ring that enables adjustment even while the pump is running; a split stuffing box that improves accessibility for easier and faster packing maintenance; a dual impeller adjustment that provides quick, easy access for impeller corrections; a replaceable wet-end cartridge that allows operators to change parts quickly with a unique, tapered impeller shaft; and an i-Alert condition monitor that measures vibration and temperature, signaling users with a blinking red LED when it detects a potential problem.

Controls dust, stabilizes soil

Pennz Suppress D is an emulsified resin product developed by Pennzoil, Co. to safely control dust, stabilize soil, and control silt run off from unpaved roads, construction yards, haul roads, and more. The formula binds particles together to strengthen the soil and is specially designed to work its way down into the soil to maximize the penetration depth. The unique binding agents form a durable, moisture-permeable surface that won’t wash away with rain and is strong enough to withstand very heavy truck loads. According to the company, the product has been extensively tested to determine that it is safe for the environment, safe for workers handling the product, and non-corrosive to vehicles and equipment applying the product and traveling on it after application. It is distributed through Genesis Soils Products.

Finger-operated joystick controller

J.R. Merritt designed its new FSI finger-operated joystick controller to be compact and lightweight. The single-axis, Hall-effect joystick features a 2.2-inch actuator height and glass-filled Zytel housing. Additional features include moisture-resistant, non-ferrous components and conformal-coated electronics for durability; and an extension-style spring return for smooth, precise operations. The controller is sealed to IP55 and meets or exceeds CE EMC requirements. An optional boot sealed to IP66 is available. Other options include a 2.6-inch actuator height, friction brake, step detent, 7-30V input, redundant output, and low power consumption.

Maintenance-free lubrication

Baldor Electric Co. says its pre-lubricated Grid-Lign coupling’s maintenance-free, lubed-for-life design eliminates the time and expense associated with preventive maintenance. Interchangeable with existing grids, hubs, and covers, this product is easy to install and eliminates unexpected downtime associated with improper coupling lubrication. Its environmentally friendly design features high-performance synthetic oil impregnated into a polymer shell that encapsulates the grid element. The polymer shell allows lubrication throughout the life of the coupling. The polymer acts as a reservoir for the oil, preventing contamination during installation.

Eliminates need for manual lubrication

The SKF hydraulic driven lubricator automatically lubricates attachments using an integrated pump driven by the hydraulic oil itself, eliminating the need for manual lubrication. The pump’s drive is provided by its drive piston, which is pressurized on an alternating basis by the machine’s hydraulic circuit via a hydraulic changeover valve. The piston performs either in a suction or delivery phase as long as the machine and/or attachment is in operation. The result is that the pump feeds the right lubricant in the right amount at the right time, says the company. Delivery rates can be adjusted or reset to meet operating requirements. The lubricator installs directly on the attachment.

Damage-resistant illumination

Two new blasting lights from Larson Electronics combine advanced LED technology with rugged, heavy-duty construction to create a light capable of withstanding damaging blast conditions. The Magnalight BL-70 LED magnetic mount blasting light (shown) produces 6,020 lumens and comes with an inline transformer for operation with standard 120 to 277V AC current. It also runs on 9 to 46V DC power without the transformer. Its magnetic mounting base provides easy placement of the light on any metallic surface. The Magnalight BL40-LED blasting light produces 7,200 lumens of intense light, is waterproof to 3 meters, corrosion resistant, available in spot or flood configuration, and can be operated with voltages ranging from 9 to 46V.

3D navigation system

Sandvik says its new 3D navigation system for surface drilling, uses satellite navigation to guide the starting point and correct course of drilling, in accordance with the drilling plan. The TIM3D consists of three essential operations — rig navigation, feed alignment, and drilling. The system is said to improve hole quality and hole position accuracy, resulting in better fragmentation and decreased boulders and fines. The system also eliminates the need for surveying and any hole marks, reducing the risk for marking errors and speeding up production. The system is based on multi-satellite RTK GNSS navigation and is compatible with GPS and GLONASS satellite systems. During drilling, the operator can follow the penetration rate and hole depth, distance to target, number of required holes, and current alignment. Drilling stops automatically at the target depth. Drilling data — quality report, position and depth of the holes, drilling time, and start and end points — are stored in the system memory, where it can be imported to various programs. The system is available for Sandvik Dpi and DX series surface top hammer drill rigs.

Leading Edge Attachments’ patented single-pointed ripper bucket is a ripper/bucket combination designed for use with excavators and backhoes. It is said to allow the operator to rip rock, coral, or frozen ground with maximum breakout force, pry out and carry stumps or cradle boulders, rip a clean narrow V trench, or scoop and load material. The unit is manufactured in the USA with high-strength Hardox 400 steel slabs for abusive or cold-weather conditions.

Primary/secondary scraper shares one mounting point

Superior Industries says its new Exterra SFL dual belt cleaner is the first ever primary and secondary belt-cleaning system to share the same, common mounting point. The unit features a tensioning system that creates pressure that is set once, for the life of the blade, during installation. The company says the belt cleaner is designed to nearly eliminate material carry-back from the top cover of conveyor belting after it passes over the head pulley. The belt cleaner is designed to accommodate head pulleys with diameters of 12 to 20 inches and belt widths of 18 to 60 inches.

Frac-sand trailer products

Streamlines railcar unloading

CycloLift railcar/truck connectors by Cyclonaire Corp. feature pneumatically actuated lifters to streamline unloading from hopper-bottom railcars. The connectors are designed to maintain a tight gate seal during unloading, while flexible rubber seals minimize product leakage. Connectors come with aluminum adapter plates that move longitudinally to speed alignment of the boot seal with the hopper slide gate and cut down on time-consuming railcar repositioning. Models are also available for hopper-bottom trucks and dual-outlet railcars, and come standard in sizes with custom-fit adapters.

On-/off-road truck tires

Michelin says its new X Works XDY commercial truck tire has a robust tread design for good traction and wear in on-/off-road applications and comes in two sizes — 11R22.5 and 11R24.5. The new XDY-EX2 tire offers a tread design with more void area for better off-road and mud traction and is available in an 11R24.5 size. Both tires feature extra-thick sidewall protection to guard against shocks, snags, and impacts.

Eats environmental problems

The Sarjeant Co. says its new Micro 50 eco-friendly degreaser quickly and naturally digests oil, grease, fuel, and other organic products. Its formula is based on a patent-pending surfactant system that lifts stains from surfaces, allowing microorganisms then to break down and digest hydrocarbon molecules. The company claims issues such as water runoff, ground pollution, and fuel and oil spills can be resolved quickly and inexpensively.

High-production jaw

The new Terex Cedarapids CRJ3054 jaw plant combines a JS3054 jaw crusher with a high-stroke, 52-inch x 20-foot vibrating grizzly feeder for high production. Plant features include a new hopper design, wedge release jaw dies, hydraulic assist jaw crusher setting, and crusher isolation mount to reduce plant vibration. The tail of the product conveyor lowers for operation, maximizing clearance under the jaw crusher. The conveyor discharge height adjusts to reduce material impact on the receiving conveyor. Options include a rock breaker, folding hopper wings, hydraulic jacks, hydraulic deployed switchgear, and several axle configurations.

Modular conveyor guards

ASGCO says its new Safe-Guard modular conveyor flat guards are pre-engineered to install easily and prevent workers from unauthorized access to areas within the conveyor system. The guard is shipped with complete mounting kits for quick assembly, which allows for drop-in installation anywhere on the conveyor system. The drop pin and wedge clamps hold the guard securely. Various standard and custom sizes are available.

Increased productivity, fuel efficiency

Caterpillar says its new 336E hydraulic excavator, which replaces the 336D, features a more powerful Tier 4 Interim engine that delivers 12 percent more power, 4 percent faster cycle times, and 5 percent more lift capacity than the 336D while improving fuel efficiency by 2 percent. Fuel-saving features include an electric regeneration valve that captures and recycles energy when the boom is lowered, an engine shutdown setting that enables operators to specify how long the machine should idle before shutting down the engine, and the ability to reduce engine speed to idle at the touch of a button. Isochronous speed control maintains constant engine speed regardless of load. The engine exhaust aftertreatment regeneration system ensures the machine works as normal with no operator intervention needed. The new cab is sealed and sound insulated and features ROPS. Joystick consoles are adjustable, and the seat is wider for enhanced operator comfort.

Greater horsepower, production

Hitachi says its new ZX Dash-5 excavators — ZX470LC-5, ZX670LC-5, and ZX870LC-5 — have greater horsepower combined with optimized hydraulics for bigger arm and bucket digging forces, resulting in more material moved per gallon of fuel. The roomier cab offers a larger door with more glass for better visibility to the side, a heated air-suspension high-back seat for excellent support, and a new easy-to-operate multi-function monitor with rotary dial for enhanced diagnostic features. A hydraulically driven reversible fan cleans debris from the radiator screen; the fan runs only when needed, reducing noise, fuel consumption, and operating costs. The new exhaust filter, consisting of a diesel oxidation catalyst/diesel particulate filter, requires no daily attention due to its 4,500-hour service life.

Excellent fuel efficiency

Caterpillar’s new 966K (shown) and 972K wheel loaders feature new designs and engines certified to meet Tier 4 Interim emissions standards. The company says the loaders feature a new operator station, new electro-hydraulic steering with either joystick or steering wheel control, Performance Series buckets, and a more efficient drive train. A new Cat C9.3 ACERT engine powers both machines. At 1,800 rpm, it delivers peak net power of 267 horsepower on the 966K and 288 horsepower on the 972K. The loaders accommodate buckets ranging in size from 3.25 to 13 cubic yards and can be equipped with a Cat Fusion coupler and a variety of work tools.

Recyclable screening media

In response to customer requests and in keeping with its sustainability program, Metso replaced the traditional steel reinforcement on its Trellex LS rubber modular screening media systems with an environmentally friendly composite material that makes it possible to recycle the media. Metso is also implementing a program to provide its customers with a suitable range of recycling services. Each screening media panel of the Metso Trellex LS-Eco is up to 40 percent lighter than standard steel reinforced panels, making handling easier and safer. The composite-reinforced panels are more flexible and are said to reduce the effects of pegging and blinding during screening operations.

Exceptional performance in aggressive applications

TB Wood’s says its Premium Belts have the highest power density of any V-belt and stretch less than standard cross sections, which makes them ideal for use on problem drives requiring high-impact strength and load-carrying power. Premium Banded belts feature a multiple-layer tie band that provides lateral rigidity to prevent belts from turning over or from coming off the drive. Premium Single belts can be used with deep groove sheaves and drives with limited room for “take up,” and can be an “A” section solution for multi-groove A/B sheaves. Premium V-belts are said to handle 1.4 to 2.2 times more horsepower than equivalent sized standard V-belts. A “clutching” non-rubber-surfaced cover allows momentary slippage due to excessive overloads without burning up the belts. Kevlar or Aramid tensile cords yield extraordinary strength, durability, and virtually zero stretch, according to the company.

One-hour installation

TruckWeight says its new scale for mechanical suspension systems can be quickly, easily, and inexpensively mounted as an aftermarket installation. The scale requires no welding or special tools and can, typically, be installed in one hour on tractors and trailers with walking beam, leaf-spring, and other mechanical suspensions. The product consists of a set of strain gauges or sensors, transmitters, and a handheld receiver. With a range of 500 feet, the receiver displays axle group and gross vehicle weight readings in three-second intervals. The gauge mounts directly to the suspension with a high-strength adhesive.

Near-zero emissions

Cummins says its new QSX15 engine is the next step in meeting near-zero emissions levels in 2014. According to the company, the 15-liter, heavy-duty engine will meet EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage IV emissions with an ultra-clean aftertreatment system combining the Cummins Particulate Filter with Selective Catalytic Reduction (CPF-SCR). The new 675-horsepower top rating for the QSX15 takes the Tier 4 Final engine 75 horsepower above the Tier 4 Interim top rating of 600 horsepower. The QSX11.9 engine increases power output for Tier 4 Final with a new top rating of 525 horsepower and shares the same engine technology and CPF-SCR ultra-clean aftertreatment system as the QSX15. Engine power density for Tier 4 Final increases to 45 horsepower per liter for the QSX15 and 44 horsepower per liter for the QSX11.9. At Tier 4 Interim 2011 emissions levels, the QSX15 and QSX11.9 engines can achieve up to 5-percent improved fuel efficiency compared to Tier 3, depending on duty cycle and machine optimization. Fuel efficiency will be further increased for Tier 4 Final 2014 by an additional 3 to 4 percent, according to the company.

Haul truck tire

Titan Tire Corp.’s new DTE4 haul truck tire offers radial construction and a deep lug tread pattern to enhance durability, dissipate heat, and provide traction. The tire features an E-4 tread depth that is said to promote long tread life and excellent traction, while the open, non-directional tread pattern provides excellent self cleaning and an extra bite on the ground. An open center tread design helps reduce internal heat generation and allows the heat to dissipate easily, reducing tire fatigue and extending tire life. Available sizes include 18.00R33, 24.00R35, 27.00R49, and 33.00R51.

Your complete guide to new and updated equipment and supplies in the aggregates industry.

Stronger performance, improved serviceability

Caterpillar says its new 390D L hydraulic excavator has a refined design that provides greater hydraulic power, stronger structural components, added safety and convenience features, and improved serviceability. The 198,570 pound-excavator’s Tier III-compliant, C18 Acert diesel engine boasts advanced electronic control, precise fuel delivery, and refined air management. The 5,080-horsepower engine is said to allow full power at maximum revolutions per minute for efficient hydraulic pump operation and positive hydraulic response.

Design enhancements in the implement’s hydraulic system allow greater digging and lifting forces than its 385C predecessor. The company says an increase in operating pressure, combined with larger diameter hydraulic cylinders, results in a 9-percent boost in digging arm and bucket breakout forces. Over-the-end lifting capacity is increased by 9 percent, and over-the-side capacity is up nearly 20 percent. The undercarriage features redesigned links that operate with lower stress, forged idlers for durability, and heavy-duty track rollers and carrier rollers. Service improvements include an electric fuel-priming pump, a dual-element air cleaner, filters that are accessible from the left side of the machine, easy-to-change spin-on filters, 20-inch-wide walkways, and an electronic warning system that alerts the operator if the air filter or hydraulic filter is approaching restriction limits.

Z-bar with Tier 4 Interim engine

LiuGong’s new fuel-efficient 842IV Z-bar wheel loader features a Tier 4 Interim, six-cylinder, four-cycle, turbocharged, water-cooled Cummins QSB6.7-C200 diesel engine that provides 193 net peak horsepower. The automatic-shift transmission, with a single-stage, three-element torque converter, transfers the engine power to provide a breakout force of 30,574 pounds. Travel speeds range from 26.2 miles per hour in forward to 16.5 miles per hour in reverse. The wheel loader’s automatic boom kick-out/return-to-dig feature ensures fast cycle times for loading using the standard 3.5-cubic-yard general-purpose bucket with reversible cutting edge. The ROPS/FOPS climate-controlled cab features an adjustable suspension seat, back-up alarm, rearview camera, and rotating beacon.

Suspended, permanent magnets

Eriez says its CP 20/80 suspended permanent magnets use a permanent magnet circuit to provide a continuous and uniform magnetic field across the feed belt, optimizing separation efficiency. The simple-to-install units measure 9.2 inches by 29.5 inches by 32.9 inches, weigh 2,313 pounds, and require no power to operate. It removes tramp metal from a 30-inch maximum belt width at a 10-inch suspension height. A self-cleaning belt provides automatic removal of accumulated tramp metal.

More power, cab improvements

John Deere has launched three new G-Series excavators with Tier 4 Interim-certified engines, more power, and cab improvements for increased visibility. The new series includes the 250G, 290G, and 350G, which range from 191 to 299 net horsepower. The new machines retain a number of key features from the previous D-Series, such as the Powerwise III management system. The cooling system cools on demand and has an optional reversing fan to blow out debris. The operator’s station features a full-suspension, high-back seat that adjusts independently from or together with the control console to accommodate any size operator. The next models within the series, the larger 470G, 670G, and 870G, will be formally introduced later this year.

Scales within the rail

Rice Lake Weighing Systems says its new RailBoss rail scales are integrated directly within the rail itself, costing about one-third that of conventional railroad scale designs. The scales install quickly and are said to require minimal space. When paired with Rice Lake’s 910i Programmable Indicator/Controller and RailBoss software, the scales offer capacities up to 320,000 pounds. The scales are available in either eight-section, full-draft systems or simpler four-section, double-draft models.

Screen Machine Industries says its new 6036T track-mounted portable stacking conveyor will revolutionize the conveyor industry. According to the company, the wireless remote-controlled conveyor will match up to any track-mounted crusher or screening plant for “on-the-fly” mobility. Its counter-weighted design and heavy-duty channel frame provide great stockpiling capability. Hydraulic top fold and cylinder positioning is said to make job site transportation and set-up quick and easy.

Parallel-lift linkage system

The Doosan DL200TC tool carrier with parallel-lift linkage system keeps the work tool flat as it is lifted, an advantage when loads need to stay level. Built around a Tier 3-compliant, 143-horsepower, six-cylinder Doosan diesel engine, the machine has an operating weight of 25,708 pounds with a standard 2.6-cubic-yard bucket; dump height is 8 feet, 11 inches; and dump reach is 3 feet, 1 inch. Bucket breakout force is 23,149 pounds with a pin-on bucket. Static tipping load is 18,913 pounds with a straight frame and 16,272 pounds at the maximum steering angle of 40 degrees. Four forward speeds range from 4.1 to 21.7 miles per hour; three reverse speeds range from 4.5 to 15.5 miles per hour.

Next generation mining tire

Titan Tire Corp. says its next generation 007 MFT mining tire offers enhanced durability, a more aggressive tread pattern, and improved heat dissipation. According to the company, testing shows that the nylon casing design ran 15-percent cooler than the steel casing in an equivalent tire, which makes the tire less susceptible to sidewall fatigue and cut damage. A new triple-bead belt package is said to improve durability, as well as the cut, chip, and wear characteristics of the tire. Sipes are incorporated into the tire lugs to provide additional traction and heat dissipation. A non-solid, center-tread design helps reduce internal heat generation and allows the heat to more easily dissipate, which allows end users to run haul trucks longer distances and at higher speeds. The tires are available in 59/80R63, 53/80R63, 40.00R57, and 27.00R49 sizes.

Larger modular screen media

Major Wire says its new line of 1- by 2-foot Flex-Mat 3 self-cleaning, polyurethane modular screen media panels will fit virtually any flat-surface screen deck, allowing screening operations using traditional polyurethane and rubber panels to increase their screening capacity and in-spec material throughput up to 50 percent. Operations can choose between snap, step, pin, and grooved panels with opening sizes of 0.020 inches up to 1½ inches. Each new 1- by 2-foot panel increases total screen media open area by 4.6 percent when compared to two 1- by 1-foot panels. No screen box changes are necessary to switch to the larger panels.

Diesel-powered portable stacker

McCloskey International’s new diesel-powered, track-mounted stacking conveyors can be easily moved and reconfigured on site as operational requirements change. The Track Stackers are 36 inches wide and are available in 65-, 80-, and 100-foot lengths. The 80-foot model has a maximum capacity of 500 tons per hour at the highest incline; the 65- and 100-foot models can carry 600 tons per hour. Up to 800 tons per hour is available as an option on all three models. The company says the conveyors are counter-weighted and the undercarriage is set back from center, which allows them to run at a 22.5-degree incline and stockpile all the way to the head pulley without burying the tracks. Discharge heights are 25 feet, 10 inches for the 65-foot stacker; 36 feet for the 80-foot stacker; and 40 feet, 5 inches for the 100-foot stacker.

High-tech truck scales

Mettler Toledo says its new VTS101 and VTC101 truck scales use a Powercell PDX load cell technology that eliminates the typical maintenance, repair costs, and downtime related to conventional vehicle scales. The VTS101 consists of a steel deck supported by orthotropic ribs that are sealed from the elements by automated continuous welds. The VTC101 draws on the strengths of both a concrete driving surface and a steel orthotropic understructure, thereby eliminating voids in the deck that occur when pouring concrete around I-beam flanges and sharp corners. The company says the Powercell PDX load cell provides predictive diagnostics, including automatic notification of weighing errors, overloading, environmental conditions, network health, load cell voltages, and enclosure integrity, without the need for maintenance-prone external converter boxes.

By Aggregates Manager Staff

Multi-frequency screen

KPI-JCI, a division of Astec Mobile Screens, expects its new multi-frequency screen to revolutionize the screening industry. With the combination of both conventional and high-frequency screen movements integrated, the screen is able to maintain the higher production rates of a PEP screen at a lower angle, while handling higher moisture content materials. Coarser material requires more amplitude and less frequency, while finer material requires less amplitude and more frequency. The multi-frequency screen combines both theories. By working at a lower operating angle, the overall height of the screen is less — making it safer to work on and operate.

Large filter press

Jingjin Filter Press Co.’s filter presses, now available in North America through Tons Per Hour, Inc., are said to be able to replace belt presses in nearly every application, eliminate settling ponds, and recycle more water than alternative methods. The company says its filter presses offer a higher quality of filtrate than a belt press, dramatically dryer solids, reduced handling cost, and no operator is required. The units boast capacities of up to 23 cubic yards of solids per cycle; up to 4.5 cycles per hour. Return on investment when replacing a belt press is said to be one year.

Next generation of screening

Metso, which manufactures the only triple-deck elliptical banana screen designed for the construction market, announced the pending release of its new Ellipti-Flo screening system at ConExpo-Con/Agg. While the banana screens are said to offer 40 percent more production on the same footprint as a typical incline screen, the new unit is expected to produce an additional 30 percent of production compared to the banana screen. Designed to handle separation of traditionally challenging material such as wet, sticky feed, the system also has high-load, bearingless exciters.

Conveyor guards

Martin Engineering says its new EVO Conveyor Guards allow workers to do their jobs with reduced risk and greater efficiency, while helping to ensure plant compliance with safety standards and regulations. The guards are self-supporting and feature a rugged modular design that installs on supplied angle-iron structure, eliminating the need to attach them to conveyor equipment.

Fast acceleration, quick cycle times

Case Construction Equipment expanded its F Series wheel loader product line with a new size class — the 1021F and 1121F. The 1021F features a 296-horsepower engine, a 5.5-cubic-yard bucket, a dump height of 121 inches, and an operating weight of 53,500 pounds. The 1121F, rated at 320 horsepower, has a 6.25-cubic-yard bucket, a dump height of 126 inches, and an operating weight of 60,800 pounds. Both models are said to provide fast acceleration, quick cycle times, and high production. Four power modes — Economy, Standard, Max, and Auto — allow operators to match engine power to the application. The new Case engines feature variable-geometry turbochargers.

Available in push-pull configuration

The H Series 621H, 623H, and 627H Wheel Tractor-Scrapers from Caterpillar use Sequence Assist and Load Assist to automate many of the operator’s most demanding tasks. When combined with Cat Grade Control, the new systems are said to unburden veteran operators and help less-experienced operators reach high productivity levels quickly. The 621H offers a push-pull configuration for the first time, which enables two scrapers to work together when loading, rather than requiring a push tractor. Each of the three models will be available with engines that meet US EPA Tier 4 Interim and EU Stage IIIB emissions standards. The 621H is a single-engine, open-bowl machine; the 623H has an elevating scraper and a single engine; and the open-bowl 627H has twin engines — one on the tractor and one on the scraper — and all-wheel drive. Capacities are increased to 24 cubic yards for the 621H and 627H. The 623H bowl maintains a 23-cubic-yard capacity, but the elevator is said to be stronger, more powerful, and easier to adjust.

The company says the system enhances safety, reduces service technician fatigue, and increases profitability by reducing tire maintenance downtime. The wheel features a two-piece lock ring that releases the tire assembly from the wheel, allowing the inner dual wheel to simply slip over the outer wheel. The ACT wheel is said to save nearly 50 percent of the time previously spent changing tires.

The ‘smart’ hydraulic system offers on-demand breakout power. At the touch of a button, the power boost feature instantly increases the excavator’s digging force up to 10 percent for 10 seconds, then resets back to normal functions. The CAPC automatically matches the excavator’s hydraulic output flow to the application. The 925D and 936D feature a no-time-limit heavy lift system that, when activated, increases hydraulic pressure to the attachment cylinders while simultaneously reducing attachment speed for better control during lifting operation. The D-Series’ new rigid x-type crawler car bodies distribute load stress throughout the frame.

The excavators feature Kobelco’s Intelligent Total Control System, a new Economy power mode, and a new ROPS/FOPS cab. The company developed a selective catalytic reduction emissions solution for the Tier 4 Interim compliant units. A rear-view camera with a color monitor, rear work lamps, and swing flashers boost safety and productivity. Several configurations are available, including a long-reach model. Standard, high and wide, and heavy-duty undercarriage options are available.

ConExpo-Con/Agg 2011 was the staging ground for the introduction of many new products and equipment for the aggregate industry. In fact, there were so many introduced at the show that we couldn’t fit them all into this one issue. So we have broken them up into categories and will run one or two categories at a time in this and the next several issues. We decided to lead off with crushers, the bad boys of the processing plant.

Expanded cone options

FLSmidth Pekin, LLC, recently merged into FLSmidth Salt Lake City, Inc., debuted three new models of its Raptor line of cone crushers at ConExpo-Con/Agg. The new models include the XL500, XL1300, and XL2000 cone crushers. The 500-horsepower XL500 is designed for secondary crushing with features such as a large feed opening, high pivot-point crushing action, and wide crushing stroke. With a head diameter of 59.06 inches, it can accept feed up to 25 percent larger than a crusher with less throw or a similar head diameter. The XL1300 is a 1,300-horsepower machine. With 2,000 horsepower, the XL2000 offers an extra-heavy-duty, high-grade steel mainframe; an automated control package; and a hydraulic tramp release cylinder and clearing system. These new features are based on customer input.

Durable construction, high production

The new Terex Cedarapids JS4552 jaw crusher, on display at the show, features durable construction and an aggressive crushing motion for high productivity. The company says the crusher is easy to operate and maintain, and offers new levels of reliability and convenience. The jaw die retention system and hydraulic assist shim system allow more uptime, as well as fast and easy jaw setting adjustments without the use of tools. Jaw die wedges, which are accessible from the sides of the crusher, are easy to remove and can be changed quickly, reducing downtime.

Highly versatile crusher

Powerscreen, a Terex company, showcased its latest XH500 horizontal shaft impact crusher at the show. Key features include a vibrating pan feeder, a double-deck live pre-screen, a feeder load management system, an under pan feeder, an efficient crusher direct-drive system, crusher hydraulic overload protection, a hydraulic raise/lower product conveyor, a new PLC control system, and large stockpiling capacities.

Works in conjunction with primary plants

Telsmith’s new Tel-Trax Model TC52 high-capacity, track-mounted cone crushing plant made a big impact on show goers. Built around the 400-horsepower model 52SBS cone crusher, Telsmith says the TC52 boosts tonnage output in secondary and tertiary applications, while accepting larger feed (up to 12-inch topsize) than 300-horsepower units. The unit is outfitted with automation controls that automatically adjust the feed rate and reduce the need for operator oversight by monitoring parameters such as crusher overload, feed bin levels, diesel power supply, and the discharge conveyor. The automated controls package also allows a soft link to additional Tel-Trax crushing and screening plants to provide a completely linked and integrated processing solution.

Track-mounted jaw

Kleemann debuted its MC 110 Z track-mounted jaw crusher at ConExpo-Con/Agg. The unit boasts a high-torque reversible hydraulic jaw and fully hydraulic gap adjustment that makes it friendly for the contractor market. The R version has an integrated grizzly, while the Z version has a fully independent, double-deck pre-screen. The unit can be fitted with an optional final screen and oversize discharge, which allows the operator to produce a final graded product with a single machine. The fuel-efficient crusher uses a Cat C9 engine and is configured for operation by a single person who can feed raw material into the crusher while using a wireless remote-control unit in the cab of an excavator or loader. Crusher dimensions are 44 by 28 inches; transport weight is 99,200 pounds; length is 47 feet, 5 inches; and width is 9 feet, 10 inches.

Quattro movement for increased feeding capacity

Atlas Copco showcased its new line of Powercrusher track-mounted mobile crushers and screeners, including jaw crushers, impact crushers, and cone crushers with a crushing capacity from 242 to 606 tons per hour, and screeners with a capacity of 242 to 485 tons per hour. The four jaw crushers incorporate “Quattro Movement” made possible by an up-thrust toggle plate position. This causes a figure-eight motion in the moving jaw, which increases the feeding capacity and produces a post-crush at the crusher outlet. The six impact crusher models use optimized geometry in the crusher box with hydraulically adjustable swing beams, resulting in a minimal percentage of oversized material and high reduction ratios and throughputs. The PC 1000 cone crusher is designed to accept an “all-in” feed that increases particle-on-particle crushing, which improves the quality of the end material shape, decreases wear, and may eliminate the need for pre-screening.

Quick set-up time

Sandvik’s new QH440 track-mounted cone crusher was on display at the show. It is designed for mobility, ease of transporting, and quick set-up time. The unit features a CH440 cone crusher capable of producing up to 388 tons per hour. Features include a heavy-duty, wear-resistant, hydraulically folding feed conveyor; a dual-coil metal detector; automated material level feed control; four jacking legs for stability; and a wide selection of optional extras. The unit comes with a choice of six crushing chambers ranging from fine to extra course. Product shape and grading can be easily adjusted by changing the throw.

Mobile impact crushing

The new MR 110 Z EVO unit from Kleemann made its first appearance in North America at ConExpo-Con/Agg. The impact crusher features a new material flow concept — the discharge chute under the crusher is 4 inches wider than the inner width of the crusher, and the subsequent discharge belt is another 4 inches wider than the discharge chute. Rapid flow of the material keeps it away from the critical area under the crusher and reduces wear. An independent vibrating double-decker pre-screen is said to improve the cost efficiency of EVO units. A newly designed crusher bypass includes changes to its geometry and form to boost performance and reduce wear. Optional new and improved screening units are available and are more than 44 percent larger in size than those on previous units, allowing for tonnages of between 350 and 450 tons per hour.

Purpose-built crusher

Sandvik displayed its QI440 track-mounted impact crusher, which features a fuel-efficient, 330kW, Tier 3-compliant, C-13 diesel engine and a Sandvik CI322 impactor. Fed via a two-deck, pre-screen, the crusher is a four-hammer, open-style rotor that discharges onto a secondary pan feeder. The unit has an operating weight of 54.9 tons and is 50.9 feet in length when in transport configuration. Additional features include a variable-speed primary pan feeder for controlled and continuous feed, an independent grizzly and underpan feeder for reduced blockages, and an optional recirculation conveyor.

Tracked HSI primary

Inertia Machine Corp. rolled out its 5066 Tracker Primary HSI Crusher at the big show. The track-mounted model is designed to deliver up to 700 tons per hour while offering trailer-free transport due to a design that includes the unit’s own removable axle. The crusher features a large 14-cubic-yard, non-heaping hopper and boasts a 60-inch by 18-foot variable-speed drive, vibrating grizzly feeder. Combined with a 42- by 64-inch feed opening, the impactor allows the handling of oversize material while preventing bridging. The 42-inch by 38-foot discharge conveyor with motorized head pulley is rated up to 1,500 tons per hour. The unit is powered by a John Deere 400-horsepower, Tier III diesel engine and a 125 kW generator.

The company says the plant is designed to allow constant choke feeding in order to maximize production. Its high-lift screen and cone hopper overflow system allow a large head of material to build up, force-feeding the cone crusher. The large cone hopper and overflow chute buffer feed variations and prevent material from backing up to the screen, allowing peak production rates with no need to throttle back. According to the company, a gross throughput of up to 1,200 tons per hour is possible in sand and gravel. The plant quickly transforms between operating and transport modes. The 6-foot by 20-foot TSH6203 triple-deck horizontal screen has a unique blending gate system that allows combining center and bottom decks in 25-percent increments. Two large 30-inch, 7.5-horsepower reversible product conveyors discharge up to 44 inches beyond the plant frame on either side. The four-axle configuration and a 3+1-axle option provide portability.

The new Terex Cedarapids MVP459X cone crusher was also on display in the Terex booth. The crusher boasts major new enhancements, including high-speed clearing of jammed material, quick crusher separation capability for fast manganese changes, and easy-to-operate computer controls. The optional “Guardian” PLC control system optimizes production and is fully automated, according to the company. The 400-horsepower crusher incorporates pinned cylinder ends that remove quickly to allow fast cone separation for faster manganese changes. At the press of a button, fully guided dual-action tramp relief cylinders provide 6-inch lift for easy clearing of jammed feed material to reduce downtime. The company says the hydro-pneumatic tramp iron relief system instantly resets the crusher setting after passing uncrushable material without having to activate valves and pumps. The hydraulic-powered threaded upper assembly allows for quick crusher setting adjustment ununder load.

Quicker cycle times

Case Construction Equipment says its new F Series wheel loaders provide faster acceleration, quicker cycle times, and higher speeds while delivering as much as 17 percent greater fuel efficiency. The new 721F, 821F, and 921F feature a 6.7-liter, Tier 4 Interim-certified engine, rated at 179, 211, and 242 horsepower, respectively. An optional, five-speed transmission with lockup torque converter, open differential axles, and advanced system programming is said to provide an 8-percent increase in fuel savings over comparable four-speed transmission models. Standard limited-slip front and rear axles provide traction in all conditions.

The 921F with 4.75-cubic-yard bucket is a new size class for Case, offering greater tipping load weight and bucket breakout force relative to its payload. The 721F and 821F offer a 3.25- and 4.25-cubic-yard bucket, respectively.

The cab provides an unobstructed view to both edges of the bucket or attachment, and features a wide window and sloping hood for clear vision to the rear. An optional rearview, wide-angle camera nearly eliminates blind spots, according to the company. Additional features include ergonomically placed controls and a heated cloth seat with seven adjustment modes.

More power, fuel efficiency

Volvo Construction Equipment’s new F-Series articulated haulers are equipped with the company’s D11 (A25F, A30F), D13 (A35F), and D16 (A40F) Tier 4i engines featuring Volvo Combustion Technology (V-ACT), which the company says improves fuel efficiency, reduces noise levels, and increases engine life.

Constant chokefeeding maximizes production

The new Terex Cedarapids CRC380HLS portable crushing and screening plant’s design is said to allow the cone crusher to be constantly choke fed, maximizing production capability. The high-lift screen and cone hopper overflow system allow a large head of material to build up to force feed the cone crusher, which increases throughput. The large cone hopper and overflow chute buffer feed variations and prevent material from backing up to the screen, which allows production rates to stay at peak levels with no need to throttle back. A gross throughput of up to 1,200 tons per hour is possible, according to the company.

500-ton-per-hour production

Con-E-Co Co., an Oshkosh Corp. company, says its new 58-foot-long, single-axle mobile conveyor is available in either a rail radial or individual plant-supported configuration to meet individual customer needs. The non-folding unit’s 30-inch-wide belt provides 500-tons-per-hour output, according to the company. The 11-foot, 6-inch by 11-foot, 6-inch receiving hopper is mounted onto the conveyor during transport for easy shipping.

Cost-effective safety

Asgco says its Safe-Guard return idler cage provides a cost-effective, durable solution for guarding needs. The cage is designed to catch the return idler to keep it from falling onto workers or equipment, preventing injuries and down time. Its open-slot design prevents material buildup. It is easy to install and remove for belt maintenance, using the mounting kit provided, which includes beam clamps, links, and adjustable chains. The cage is available in various sizes to fit most belt conveyors.

Engineered for higher energy per blow

Tramac says its new V4500 heavy breaker was specifically engineered to provide a higher energy per blow. With an impact class of 13,000 foot pounds, the breaker fits carriers ranging from 99,200 to 176,400 pounds and has an operating weight of 9,921 pounds. The tool is 7.5 inches in diameter and 29.7 inches long. Other features include blank-firing protection to prevent metal-on-metal contact, a pressure regulator valve to prevent overpressure and accidental overflow, reinforced suspension to absorb vibration, an automatic pressure regulator to ensure constant operation despite variation in flow or temperature, an automatic frequency adaptation system, an energy recovery feature that captures rebound energy for the next blow, and an automatic greasing system.

Abrasion-resistant slide gate

Vortex Valves says its new Titan Series abrasion-resistant slide gate features gravity flow with a dust-tight seal. The gate is framed with a carbon steel channel and features live-loaded, wear-compensating seals that prevent materials from escaping into the bonnet area of the gate. The gate uses easily accessible, hardened-steel, cam-adjustable rollers instead of blade guides. A wide selection of gate positioning controls, position indication switches, and flanges make it easy to adapt the gate to a system. Gates are available in standard sizes from 6 to 30 inches with custom square or rectangular sizes up to 72 inches and larger.

Upgrade to flowmeter line

Universal Flow Monitors added a transmitter to its lubrication flowmeter line. The three variable area lubrication meters in the line (SN, MN, and LL) now have compact, non-contact magnetically coupled transmitters instead of potentiometers that can easily wear out. The meters monitor the rate of oil flow to keep gears, bearings, drills, and mills functional. The LL piston-style meters, used in aggregate production, are designed for flows from 0.25 to 20 gallons per minute, with a full-scale readout accuracy of +/-5 percent. All of the flowmeters are said to be easy to install, operate, and maintain.

Breaker with nitrogen gas-assisted operation

Doosan says its new DXB170H hydraulic breaker features nitrogen gas-assisted operation for improved efficiency. The 3,572-pound breaker delivers up to 600 blows per minute and is designed for use with excavators in the 18- to 28-metric-ton weight range. Rated in the 5,000 foot-pound impact energy class, the breaker requires a hydraulic flow rate between 26.5 and 39.5 gallons per minute. Tight tolerances in the manufacture of the pistons and cylinders eliminate leaks and jamming and guarantee full interchangeability of replacement parts, according to the company. Other features include a patented hydraulic dampening system said to prevent blank-fire damage, an energy recovery system said to increase strike power using energy generated by piston rebound, a patented main valve design said to reduce hydraulic pressure peaks, as well as a suspension system that extends boom life by absorbing harmful vibrations and stress waves.

Web-based workforce management
