This ConExpo-Con/Agg year yielded a multitude of new products offering everything from reduced emissions to increased productivity.

FLSmidth Salt Lake City, Inc.

Large feed opening

FLSmidth’s Raptor XL500 cone crusher features a large feed opening, high pivot-point crushing action, and wide crushing stroke. Its large 59.06-inch-diameter head and eccentric motion is said to allow feed up to 25 percent larger than crushers with less throw and similar head diameter. The crusher’s 148-inch diameter and 106,500-pound weight offer flexibility for multi-site crushing operations.

Telsmith, Inc., an Astec company

Advanced jaw crusher technology

Telsmith says its H3244 Hydra-Jaw, the largest model in its Hydra-Jaw Series, features advanced jaw crusher technology that offers lower operating costs, increased uptime and production capacity, streamlined operation and maintenance, and greater safety. The crusher’s 32-inch gape and 44-inch width is designed to accept larger feed; the Hydra-Jaw toggle provides hydraulic tramp iron relief with automatic reset, chamber clearing, and push-button setting adjustments. The unit can be mounted on portable plants or modular fixed-structure assemblies.

Terex Minerals Processing Systems

Easy clearing of jammed feed

The Terex Cedarapids MVP450X 400-horsepower cone crusher boasts major new enhancements, including high-speed clearing of jammed material, quick crusher separation capability for fast manganese changes, and easy-to-operate computer controls. The optional “Guardian” PLC control system optimizes production and is fully automated, according to the company. At the press of a button, fully guided dual-action tramp relief cylinders provide 6-inch lift for easy clearing of jammed feed material. The company says the hydro-pneumatic tramp iron relief system instantly resets the crusher setting after passing uncrushable material without having to activate valves and pumps. The hydraulic-powered threaded upper assembly allows for quick crusher setting adjustment under load.

How we made our choices

When we ask readers how we can best help them keep track of changes in the products and services they use to produce aggregates, almost everyone wants an annual short list of the really important stuff.

No wonder. The sheer volume of introductions is overwhelming. Aggregates Manager covers dozens of products each year in its RollOuts departments and Supply Lines features.

So each year, our staff reviews all the product introductions we’ve covered for the past year (our Top RollOuts “year” actually runs from the December 2010 issue through the November 2011 issue) to pick out 25 that we believe are worth further review. Our priorities are new concept products — which are rare — new series/new generation products in categories that relate to the aggregates industry, and other rollouts which serve our readers’ interests by increasing competition in a product category.

Inevitably, we omit deserving products, either because we just didn’t understand the significance of the product or because the announcing company didn’t communicate what was special about the product, or both. In either case, we apologize in advance for these omissions.

This year, we’ve added smart tags that lead to videos for many of the Top RollOuts. These videos include insights from the manufacturers and an explanation of some of the unique features. Go to http://www.gettag.mobi and download the free app, then scan each tag for more information.

KPI-JCI, a division of Astec Mobile Screens

Revolutionary multi-frequency screen

KPI-JCI expects its multi-frequency screen to revolutionize the screening industry. With the combination of both conventional and high-frequency screens, the unit is able to maintain the higher production rates of a PEP screen at a lower angle, while handling higher moisture content materials. Coarser material requires more amplitude and less frequency, while finer material requires less amplitude and more frequency. The multi-frequency screen combines both theories. By working at a lower operating angle, the overall height of the screen is less — making it safer to work on and operate.

Sandvik

Sets new throughput standards

Sandvik says its QE440 scalping screen sets new throughput standards for the industry with over 40-percent greater screening area than the former market leader, the QE340. The 76,360-pound machine features stockpiling conveyors that are wider and higher for increased production capacity and larger stockpiling capabilities. The 53-foot, 6-inch unit is easily transported due to its hydraulic folding tail and side conveyors and its fully tracked chassis. Additional features include a screening surface 40 percent larger than its predecessor; and stockpiling conveyors in three sizes — oversize (5 feet, 3 inches wide and up to a 13-foot, 7-inch discharge height), mid-size (3 feet wide and a 13-foot, 11-inch discharge height), and fines collector (3 feet, 3 inches wide and a 13-foot, 8-inch discharge height).

Metso Minerals

Increased production

While banana screens are said to offer 40 percent more production on the same footprint as a typical incline screen, Metso says its Ellipti-Flo screening system is expected to increase production by an additional 30 percent over the banana screen. Designed to handle separation of traditionally challenging material such as wet, sticky feed, the system also has high-load, bearingless exciters.

Atlas Copco

Increased feed capacity

Atlas Copco says its line of track-mounted Powercrusher mobile crushers and screeners includes four jaw crushers that incorporate “Quattro Movement” for maximum processing efficiency. Quattro Movement is made possible by an up-thrust toggle plate position. This causes a figure-eight motion in the moving jaw, which increases the feed capacity and produces a post-crushing effect as rocks exit the crushing chamber. Models include the PC 1055 J with a total weight of 34 metric tons and an output capacity of up to 200 metric tons per hour. The 40-ton PC 2 delivers up to 250 tons per hour. The PC 4 weighs in at 45 tons and provides up to 300 tons per hour. The 55-ton PC 6 has a double-deck independent pre-screen section just before the crushing chamber and delivers up to 350 tons per hour.

Metso Minerals

Produces two-sized fractions

Metso says its Lokotrack ST3.5 portable plant can produce two-sized fractions, with an optional two-deck vibrating grid that can be installed to yield three-sized fractions. The unit’s screen box is 11 feet, 7 inches by 5 feet with a 57-square-foot screen area and is powered by a 100-horsepower Cat 4.4 engine. Four identical meshes are used on the screen to lower stock requirements.

Kleemann/Wirtgen America Inc.

Mobile impact crushing

The MR 110 Z EVO impact crusher from Kleemann features a new material flow concept — the discharge belt is 4 inches wider than the discharge chute which is 4 inches wider than the inner width of the crusher. The rapid flow of material keeps it away from the critical area under the crusher and reduces wear. Additional features include an independent vibrating double-decker pre-screen and a newly designed crusher bypass that includes changes to its geometry and form to boost performance and reduce wear. Optional new and improved screening units are available and are more than 44 percent larger in size than those on previous units, allowing for tonnages of between 350 and 450 tons per hour.

Titan Tire says its next generation 007 MFT mining tire offers enhanced durability, a more aggressive tread pattern, and improved heat dissipation. According to the company, testing shows that the nylon casing design ran 15-percent cooler than the steel casing in an equivalent tire. A new triple-bead belt package is said to improve durability, as well as the cut, chip, and wear characteristics of the tire. Sipes are incorporated into the tire lugs to provide additional traction and heat dissipation, which makes the tire less susceptible to sidewall fatigue and cut damage. A non-solid, center-tread design helps reduce internal heat generation and allows the heat to more easily dissipate. The tires are available in 59/80R63, 53/80R63, 40.00R57, and 27.00R49 sizes.

During a lean economy, manufacturers introduced new products and equipment that feature increased fuel efficiency, increased productivity, and cost savings.

By Kerry Clines, Senior Editor, and Therese Dunphy, Editor-in-Chief

How we made our choices

When we ask readers how we can best help them keep track of changes in the products and services they use to produce aggregates, almost everyone wants an annual short list of the really important stuff.

No wonder. The sheer volume of introductions is overwhelming. Aggregates Manager covers dozens of products each year in its RollOuts departments and Supply Lines features.

So each year, our staff reviews all the product introductions we’ve covered for the past year (our Top RollOuts “year” actually runs from the December 2009 issue through the November 2010 issue) to pick out 25 that we believe are worth further review.

Atlas Copco Construction Equipment

Hybrid excavators come to North America

Komatsu’s 138-horsepower, 20- to 22-ton PC200LC-8 hybrid excavator has an operating weight of 43,643 to 47,260 pounds and a bucket capacity of 0.66 to 1.57 cubic yards. The machine’s hybrid system works on the principle of swing energy regeneration and energy storage through the use of an electric swing motor. The kinetic energy generated during the swing braking phase is converted to electricity, which is sent through an inverter and captured by the capacitor. The captured energy is then discharged quickly for upper structure rotation and to assist the engine when accelerating under work load conditions. Tests comparing the hybrid to Komatsu’s standard excavator showed a 25- to 40-percent reduction in fuel consumption, according to the company.

In a tough market, manufacturers respond with product introductions that offer streamlined features, greater efficiency, and better economy.

by Kerry Clines, Senior Editor, and Therese Dunphy, Editor-in-Chief,

How we made our choices

When we ask readers how we can best help them keep track of changes in the products and services they use to produce aggregates, almost everyone wants an annual short list of the really important stuff.

No wonder. The sheer volume of introductions is overwhelming. Aggregates Manager covers hundreds of products each year in its RollOuts departments and Supply Lines features.

So each year, our staff reviews all the product introductions we’ve covered for the past year (our Top RollOuts “year” actually runs from the December 2008 issue through the November 2009 issue) to pick out 25 that we believe are worth further review.

Sand Processing

How we made our choices

When we ask readers how we can best help them keep track of changes in the products and services they use to produce aggregates, almost everyone wants an annual short list of the really important stuff.

No wonder. The sheer volume of introductions is overwhelming. Aggregates Manager covers hundreds of products each year in its RollOuts departments and Supply Lines features.

So each year, our staff reviews all the product introductions we’ve covered for the past year (our Top RollOuts “year” actually runs from the December 2007 issue through the November 2008 issue) to pick out 25 that we believe are worth further review. Our priorities are new concept products – which are rare – new series/new generation products in categories that relate to the aggregates industry, and other rollouts which serve our readers’ interests by increasing competition in a product category.

Inevitably, we omit deserving products, either because we just didn’t understand the significance of the product or because the announcing company didn’t communicate what was special about the product, or both. In either case, we apologize in advance for these omissions.

Case Construction Equipment

Production-class wheel loader

Case continued to expand its earthmoving machines into larger categories in 2008 by launching its 320-horsepower, 7.6-cubic-yard 1221E wheel loader. Designed for quarry work, road construction, and site preparation applications, the new machine features a large, isolation-mounted cab that is said to be among the quietest in the category. It features floor-to-ceiling glass in front and a sloped rear engine compartment for excellent sight lines front and rear. Maintenance features include ground-level service checks and remote drains for coolant, engine oil, and hydraulic oil. The 1221E also offers a Ride Control option that improves material retention and cuts operator wear and tear in load-and-carry applications.

Volvo Construction Equipment

E-Series Artics

Volvo says its new, seven-model E-Series articulated haulers are the first to offer a suspension system with automatic leveling and stability control on all wheels. The lineup ranges from the 26.5-ton A25E to the 43-ton A40E. Tier 3 engines have brought a surge of power: the A40E FS got a 12-percent increase in horsepower and a 19-percent increase in torque.

The A35E and A40E models also have a new fully-automatic nine-speed “fast adaptive” transmission that features an optimized gear shift pattern with a precise overlap of ratios to provide constant power transfer. All models have new frames, axles, and a new single-speed drop box with longitudinal differential and 100-percent lockup to reduce power losses and improve traction and fuel efficiency.

Also new: more powerful exhaust brakes and retarders, and improved cooling systems.

Telsmith

Longer-life screens

Telsmith, an Astec company, introduced a new line of inclined vibrating screens at ConExpo-Con/Agg. The Vibro-King TL series replaces the Vibro-King and Specmaker lines, boasting longer service life, reduced maintenance requirements, and lower operating costs. The new screen features a TL shaft assembly with a revolutionary “Never-Wear” seal design that eliminates contact seals, reducing maintenance and extending service life. All TL shaft assemblies use wide-series-bearing and polished-shaft-bearing journals for longer life.

Kleemann

Large, versatile crusher

Kleemann introduced the impactor-based Mobirex MR 130-Z. The unit is a closed-circuit machine with a fully independent two-deck prescreen before the primary impact crusher box. Material is dropped onto a feeder, scalped over the independent pre-screen, and through an onboard screen after the crusher, where oversize is recirculated back into the crusher. Kleemann says it is two machines in one: a crusher and a screen box.

GreyStone

Uses half the horsepower

The Aggre-Dry FMW (fine material washer) Screen from GreyStone washes and dewaters aggregate material, combining a fine material screw and dewatering screen that the company says produces sand and gravel with a moisture content as low as 8 to 13 percent, by weight, while using less than half the horsepower required to process the same tonnage of spec product using a traditional screen/cyclone system. The dewatering screen features a 0.25-mm screen that reduces the amount of material that can fall through the screen. The feed from the screw allows the material to build to a bed depth of 14 inches on the screen, squeezing additional moisture from the sand as the vibratory motors move it along the length of the screen cloth, further reducing moisture content.

Sandvik

Retrofittable VSI rotor

Sandvik Mining & Construction’s new Sandvik Hurricane rotor is said to offer breakthrough benefits in VSI autogenous rotor design. With four new rotor and wear parts design patents pending, major improvements include the following: increased rotor throughput of up to 30 percent for the same power draw; increased uptime and availability due to reduced overall maintenance; fewer wear parts required; increased commonality of parts that decreases stocking requirements; and decreased vibration levels from the new design.

McLanahan Corp.

Dewaters plant sludge

McLanahan Corp. obtained exclusive rights to market Matec Machinery’s HPT Plate and Frame Filter Press in the Americas. The company says Matec’s use of high pressure technology (HPT) allows the press to work at pressures of up to 300 pounds per square inch and handle even the most difficult, high-clay-content sludge. The Matec Press is said to function without use of flocculants and does not require a full-time operator to monitor feed density, flocculant dosage, or belt conditions. McLanahan says the unit also eliminates the need for settling ponds.

Stedman

Innovative housing and rotor

Stedman rolled out its new, patent-pending V-Slam VS-88 vertical shaft impactor. The crusher features innovative housing and rotor designs; an easy-access, low-profile, split-swing lid; higher operating speed for finer grinding; and capacities up to 500 tons per hour.

Track-mounted impactor

Fintec unveiled a new track-mounted impactor that combines its expertise in designing track-mounted mobile crushers with the impact-crusher expertise of its new parent company, Sandvik. The new 1440 features a Sandvik PR301D impactor with a fluid clutch drive and a 440-horsepower engine. Fed by a two-deck pre-screen, the crusher is a four-hammer, open-style rotor. The unit has an operating weight of 49.8 metric tons and is about 51 feet long. It is designed for throughputs of 300 to 350 metric tons per hour.

W.S. Tyler

Long-lasting fine wire

W.S. Tyler introduced Ty-Ger Wire, a high-carbon industrial wire available for high-wear screening application. The company says this hard steel wire was traditionally available only in larger diameters, but it has developed a patented process to create a small diameter wire that is high-wear, tear-resistant, and extremely elastic. The company says Ty-Ger Wire has up to two times the tensile strength of stainless steel and up to four times the strength of basic steel.

Metso Minerals

Efficient cone crusher

Metso Minerals rolled out its new cone crusher, the Nordberg HP5. The second in an all-new series of high-performance cones, it is designed to offer efficient production of high-quality end products. The HP5 is said to produce much finer products with fewer crushing stages, thereby saving energy and lowering costs. With a combination of optimized speed and a large throw, the company says the unit offers the highest reduction ratios of any cone crusher currently on the market. Its efficient crushing action improves power consumption, resulting in a lower kilowatt-hour per ton of crushed end product with lower recirculation load, according to Metso.
