The owner of a quarry in York Hill, Connecticut may soon be able to discharge wastewater into a nearby waterway.

York Hill Trap Rock Quarry Co. is seeking a wastewater discharge permit that would allow the quarry to discharge stormwater runoff into the nearby Harbor Brook and groundwater into the Quinnipiac River watershed, The Record Journal reports [2].

The report notes that the company received an industrial stormwater general permit in October 2011, but the permit did not include mine dewatering discharges.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) gave its tentative approval of the permit earlier this month and has issued a draft permit noting that the tentative decision “will protect the waters of the state from pollution,” according to the report. If approved, the permit would require treatment of the wastewater and “periodic monitoring to demonstrate that the discharge will not cause pollution.”
