The figures come from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics preliminary data, which show total employment in the industry is at 5.812 billion–the highest since August 2009, when the total number of jobs was at 5.851 billion.

In addition to job gains, the construction industry’s unemployment rate dropped for the fifth consecutive month, falling from 10.8 percent in May to 9.8 percent in June. This is the industry’s lowest unemployment rate since August 2008, when the 8.2 percent of workers were unemployed.

The U.S. as a whole added 195,000 jobs in June, while the unemployment rate stood at 7.6 percent.
