shutterstock_67044274 [1]The U.S. construction industry gained 20,000 jobs in September, according to a report from our sister site, Equipment World [2].

The figures come from data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which show that the industry employs 5.826 million Americans — a 3-percent gain over September 2012 and the highest number since August 2009, when 5.851 million were employed.

The figures were scheduled to be released at the beginning of October, but the 16-day federal government shutdown delayed all reports [3] until the government reopened Wednesday [4].

Unemployment in construction fell from 9.1 percent in August [5] to 8.5 percent in September — the lowest unemployment rate the industry has experienced since August 2008, when the rate was 8.2 percent.

The U.S. saw a gain of 148,000 jobs in all industries in September, while the total unemployment rate fell to 7.2 percent.
