shutterstock_114098614 [1]The construction industry added 7,000 jobs in May to reach a total of more than 5.8 million industry employees, according to our sister site, Equipment World [2].

The figures come from recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, which also showed that construction employment in May was the highest it’s been since August 2009.

Preliminary data showed a loss of 6,000 jobs in April, but a revision brought that figure down to 2,000, which could mean the industry a 5,000-job gain if May’s gains hold up.

In addition to the increase in jobs, the industry experienced a 13.2-percent fall in unemployment in May, bringing the unemployment rate to 10.8 percent–the lowest since September 2008.

The United States as a whole experienced an addition of 175,000 jobs in May and a 7.6-percent rise in the unemployment rate.
