Don’t Move that Big Iron: Stoody 964 AP-G Hardfacing Wire Enables All-Position Welding, Achieves World’s Most Wear-Resistant Deposit

[1]ST. LOUIS,  – Achieving a 64 Rockwell C hardness, Stoody 964 AP-G [2] is the world’s most wear-resistant, all-position, general-purpose hardfacing wire. No other all-position wire can achieve this hardness and still produce crack-free deposits on Series 300 stainless and manganese steels. When logistics dictate hardfacing construction, mining, aggregate and agricultural equipment in position, using 964 AP-G flux cored wire increases uptime.

“For field repair situations, 964 AP-G offers vertical up weldability where most chromium carbide wires must be welded in the flat position to obtain proper adhesion,” notes Jack Wallin, senior product development engineer. “By eliminating the time associated with moving equipment and parts and welding them in position, 964 AP-G helps lower overall maintenance and repair costs while increasing uptime.”

The weld deposit made by 964 AP-G is a specially formulated, wear resistant alloy that produces a uniform distribution of small primary carbides in a martensitic matrix. The small carbides provide greatly improved wear resistance over martensitic steel, many tool steels and some conventional chromium carbide alloys.

Deposits are crack free on carbon steel, 300 series stainless steels and manganese steels. Other base metals should be pre- and post-heated appropriately. The material is characterized by a high hardness (58 to 64 RHC) and excellent wear resistance. The 964 AP-G flux cored wire is recommended for parts where cross checking is undesirable.
