Drakes Creek Holding Company may soon begin mining for limestone at its proposed quarry site in Franklin, Kentucky, after receiving a conditional use permit last week, according to Bowling Green’s WBKO .
Kentucky’s Department for Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement’s Division of Field Services issued the permit to the company — part of DeWeese Construction — on August 5.
Tim Smith, executive vice president of DeWeese, told WBKO the company began working on construction at the site within 48 hours of gaining the permit.
Smith added that the quarry will add six jobs initially, with the possibility of more jobs at a later time.
“Neighbors Against the Quarry,” a group opposing Drakes Creek Holding Company’s proposed quarry, has expressed concerns about the company receiving the permit.
Group member David Carver said he is worried about safety, directly pointing to the proximity of the quarry site to areas like parks, ball fields and homes. He added that nearby roads and a one-lane bridge would be too narrow for trucks to safely drive.
Smith said the company is working to make the area safe, stating that blasts at the site would be infrequent and that the company is discussing safety concerns with park officials.
Carver said “Neighbors Against the Quarry” intends to appeal the permit.
