vulcan-materials-logo [1]Following a court ruling allowing Vulcan Materials to begin mining at Azusa Rock Quarry, the city of Duarte has hired a company to install a device to measure air quality near the quarry, according to a report from ABC-7 [2] in Los Angeles.

Vulcan Materials and Duarte went through years of legal battles over the quarry before Duarte announced it would stop challenging Vulcan’s mine development [3] at Azusa. Vulcan was given permission in May to begin mining [4] and announced last week that it will start mine development at its Azusa site [5].

Duarte paid the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) approximately $40,000 to place a monitor near the quarry to measure air quality. The company will also place a second monitor in the quarry, ABC-7 reports.

Sam Atwood told ABC-7 on behalf of AQMD that the company’s inspectors visit the site unannounced to ensure all equipment is working properly and air pollution is at a minimum.

Vulcan Materials told ABC-7 in a written statement that it is “confident in our operations and the environmental management systems we have put in place to safeguard human health.”
