The amount of freight that the for-hire transportation industry carried fell 0.2 percent in June, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
The data, from this month’s BTS Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments according to mode of transportation. The drop in these figures follows a one-month decline in freight shipments in May.
USDOT attributes the decrease in freight transportation to a decline in rail carloads and pipeline shipments .
The 114.3 index in June follows May’s 114.1 index (revised from 114.3 ). June’s level of freight shipments is 20 percent higher than the April 2009 low and 1.2 percent lower than the all-time high of 115.2 in December 2011.
The June 2013 Freight TSI is up 1.4 percent year-over-year.
