The amount of freight that the for-hire transportation industry carried fell 0.7 percent in October, according to data released Thursday from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
The data, from this month’s BTS Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments according to mode of transportation.
The decline in these figures follows three consecutive months of increases in freight shipments. BTS attributes the decrease in freight transportation to decreases in air freight, rail carloads and trucking.
The 114.3 index in October follows September’s revised index of 115.1 .
October’s level of freight shipments is 20.5 percent higher than the April 2009 low and 0.7 percent the all-time high of 115.1 in September 2013.
The October 2013 Freight TSI is up 2.0 percent year-over-year.
