The amount of freight that the for-hire transportation industry carried fell 1.2 percent in April, according to data released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
The data, from this month’s BTS Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments according to mode of transportation.
The drop in these figures follows five consecutive months of increased freight shipments.
The 112.4 index in April follows March’s 113.7 index . April’s level of freight shipments is 18.5 percent higher than the April 2009 low and 2.4 percent lower than the all-time high of 115.2 in December 2011.
The April 2013 Freight TSI is up 1.2 percent year-over-year.
