The amount of freight that the for-hire transportation industry carried fell 2.8 percent in January, according to data released Wednesday from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
The data, from this month’s BTS Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments according to mode of transportation.
The decline in these figures comes after a 1.0-percent decrease in freight shipments in December .
BTS attributes the decrease in freight transportation to “a period of severe winter weather, which particularly hit the heavily populated parts of the country.”
The 113.6 index in January follows December’s revised index of 116.8.
December’s level of freight shipments is 19.8 percent higher than the April 2009 low of 94.7 and 3.5 percent below the all-time high of 117.6 in November .
The January 2014 Freight TSI is up 1.3 percent year-over-year.
