The amount of freight that the for-hire transportation industry carried rose 0.3 percent in March, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
The data, from this month’s BTS Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments according to mode of transportation.
This is the fifth consecutive month freight shipments have risen.
The 113.7 index in March follows February’s 133.3 index. March’s level of freight shipments is 19.9 percent higher than the April 2009 low and 1.3 percent lower than the all-time high of 115.2 in December 2011. The March 2013 Freight TSI is up 2.8 percent year-over-year.
Though growth across most freight modes rose in March, seasonally adjusted rail traffic declined.
