The amount of freight that the for-hire transportation industry carried was up 1.2 percent in February, according to data released Wednesday from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

The data, from this month’s BTS Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments according to mode of transportation.

The rise in these figures comes after a 2.8-percent decrease in freight shipments in January. BTS attributes the increase in freight transportation to a rise in “the demand for goods,” which helped boost shipments despite “unusually severe weather.”

The 115.2 index in February follows January’s revised index of 113.9. The January index stood at 113.6 in the preliminary report released last month [2].

February’s level of freight shipments is 21.6 percent higher than the April 2009 low of 94.7 and 2 percent below the all-time high of 117.6 in November 2013.

The February 2014 Freight TSI is up 2.1 percent year-over-year.
