The amount of freight that the for-hire transportation industry carried rise 1.2 percent in November, according to data released Thursday from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

The data, from this month’s BTS Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments according to mode of transportation.

The rise in these figures comes after a 0.7-percent decline in freight shipments in October [1].

BTS attributes the increase in freight transportation to decreases in air freight, rail carloads and trucking.

The 116.5 index in November follows October’s revised index of 114.3.

November’s level of freight shipments is 22.8 percent higher than the April 2009 low of 94.9 and sets a new record that exceeds the previous all-time high of 115.8 in September [2].

The November 2013 Freight TSI is up 3.8 percent year-over-year.
