Government shutdown affects transportation projects

The federal government shutdown that began a week ago has already begun to affect transportation construction projects, according to a report from our sister site, Better Roads .
During a discussion with Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) about the shutdown’s impact on transporation, American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) President and CEO Pete Ruane said the shutdown is creating problems with the approval process that was set forth with Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century’s (MAP-21) streamlining process.
“Due to furloughs in the environmental and resource agencies, however, the approval process for transportation projects is encountering more obstacles,” Ruane said. “This outcome is the exact opposite of the goals of MAP-21’s streamlining provisions.”
Ruane said the project approvals, in addition to funding, are necessary to create and maintain reliable transportation infrastructure.
“The fact remains that if environmental regulators can’t do their job, we can’t do ours,” Ruane said.
