Grassroots advocates recognized at awards ceremony
Three individuals were recognized for their advocacy efforts at the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association’s (NSSGA) Honors Award Ceremony. “Growing Forward,” a grassroots recognition program, recognizes association member participation on issues such as transportation reauthorization and other legislative initiatives and awards points for various grassroots activities.
“I truly believe our efforts, along with our coalition partners, have made transportation top-of-mind,” said Ron Summers, NSSGA’s 2012 chairman of the board, during the presentation. “Transportation infrastructure is mentioned daily on television news, radio talk shows, in the newspapers, and on the Web, and I am giving NSSGA grassroots initiatives a lot of credit for keeping up a steady drumbeat on behalf of this critical issue.”
This year’s winners include:
Grassroots CEO of the Year: Steve Sloan, president & CEO, Midwest Minerals, Inc., Pittsburg, Kansas.
Sloan developed personal relationships with his state’s entire congressional delegation, hosted events and fundraisers, and held one-on-one meetings with members of Congress. He also served as vice chairman of the NSSGA’s Surface Transportation Task Force.
Grassroots Coordinator of the Year: David Donaldson, vice president, governmental and community relations, Vulcan Materials Co., Birmingham, Ala.
Donaldson directed his company’s efforts in support of NSSGA’s “Floor It!” and “Get There” initiatives, resulting in nearly 150 meetings with members of Congress. In addition, the company hosted numerous candidates at its facilities and thousands of employees responded to action alerts.
Grassroots Advocate of the Year: Doug Davidson, depot operations manager, Lafarge, Streetsboro, Ohio.
Davidson met with several members of Congress during the build-up to MAP-21 and reported back to his company and the association about their positions on key issues.
Pete Lien, chairman of the Government Affairs Committee, and Pam Whitted, NSSGA’s Senior Vice President for Legislative and Regulatory Affairs, presented the awards.
