About 125 residents attended a public meeting regarding a proposed quarry near Americus, Indiana.

Residents in Tippecanoe and Carroll counties in Indiana on Tuesday packed out a public meeting regarding a proposed stone quarry near the town of Americus, according to a report from WLFI [2].

Nearly 400 residents had petitioned for the meeting, and about 125 attended.

At the 90-minute meeting, the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) took notes on residents concerns about the proposed quarry. The DNR, which is focused on the quarry’s effects on flooding, groundwater and wildlife, will take the notes to permit reviewers for follow-up.

The DNR still needs to finish its fish and wildlife review before it can approve or deny the proposal. The process is expected to take several months.

However, Americus Area Community Coalition co-organizer Nate Hofmann said the coalition intends to appeal the decision if the quarry is approved.

We’re not going to give up, we’re not going to stop. We’re not going to quit and we’re going to keep going until the job gets done,” Hoffman said.

The proposal also requires approval from the Board of Zoning Appeals.
