Recently, employees from the Lafarge North America Chicago aggregates team participated in their third annual river cleanup on the local Des Plaines River. The cleanup was organized through the environmental non-profit Living Lands & Waters and included members of the Lafarge US team from all over the Chicago area.
“The river cleanup was an amazing opportunity for us to give back and do our part for the community and the environment by helping to maintain the waterway that we use on a daily basis,” said general manager for Chicago Aggregates Sean Hawley.
The afternoon cleanup was a successful show of teamwork between Lafarge and Living Lands & Waters. Using boats provided by Living Lands & Waters, the team of Lafarge volunteers were taken to two different river banks where they collected three boatloads of garbage equaling 5,000 pounds within two hours. Their collection included 20 tires and one mini fridge. Chicago Aggregates also made a monetary donation to Living Lands & Waters.
Throughout the country, Lafarge gives back to the communities surrounding its operations through environmental and community programs such as Living Lands & Waters. From the launch of its corporate Sustainability Ambitions 2020 to biodiversity and habitat projects organized by local operations, environmental stewardship is practiced at all levels.
