In addition, Lafarge used recycled concrete in the parking lot sub-base in lieu of virgin material. The recycled concrete was processed to have the same physical properties as the gravel, resulting in more than 40,000 metric tons of concrete being diverted from landfills. An additional benefit occurred in reduced haul distance resulting in a reduction of more than 1,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

“Building sustainably is an important part of every project at YYC,” said Jody Moseley, Director of Corporate Communications and Marketing The Calgary Airport Authority. “YYC was Canada’s first GoGreen certified airport and we continue to focus on new and innovative ways to develop the airport, while minimizing our environmental footprint.”

For this project, approximately 1,500 tires were effectively diverted from landfill. The end results were: more than 42,470 metric tons of material diverted from landfill and recycled for this project and a reduction of 1392.7 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
