Lafarge North America’s Paulding Cement plant in Paulding, Ohio mounted a bat shelter in one of the plant’s wildlife habitat areas this week in honor of Earth Day.

Tim Weible, senior environmental manager at the plant, said the site is certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council and has a responsibility to be aware of surrounding wildlife. Weible noted that the plant installed the bat shelter as a response to the declining bat population.

Bats control pests, like mosquitoes, as well as pollinate and disperse seeds. Many bat habitats have been destroyed, so the Paulding plant aimed to create haven for the mammals.

“By installing a bat shelter on-site, we hope to attract more bats to the area and help restore the bat population by providing a safe place to roost,” Weible said.
