City officials in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, are asking engineers to report on the safety of roads near a proposed quarry, according to a report from Lee’s Summit Journal .
Lee’s Summit City Council approved a permit for the quarry in August , but the Missouri Department of Natural Resources said it wants more information about the area’s safety.
The quarry would sit on unstable land. When the permit was granted, residents expressed concerns about the roof of the mine collapsing once blasting begins.
The review will look at how the mine and could affect the nearby Interstate 470, which was deemed in 2003 too unstable to support structures.
City Manager Steve Arbo said the review is simply a precaution.
“Based on the knowledge we have today,” Arbo said. “We think the public road system and structures are not at risk…if we thought it was dangerous, we wouldn’t allow roads to be there today.”
