Lexington, Kentucky, hosted the first ever national metal and nonmetal mine rescue competition. Mine rescue teams from across the country gathered to compete in 75-minute long drills that took them through real-life emergency scenarios.
Competitors were fit with monitors to track their every move by utilizing cameras and a combination of wireless and other tracking devices.
Competition started with five-member teams facing an emergency scenario. The team members had to search and account for missing miners following standard mine rescue procedures.
There was also a first aid competition that involved two-men technician teams tasked with ensuring that multi-gas and self-contained breathing apparatuses work properly. Teams had to be able to perform medical emergency techniques.
