The Maine Land Use Planning Commission on Wednesday approved an application for a gravel pit in the Madrid Township, according to a report from the Franklin Sun Journal .
Mark Beauregard requested a permit for the gravel pit earlier this year. The permit would include crushing rock on site and transporting the gravel on Reeds Mill Road. The pit will use loaders, trucks and screens.
Commissioners have required Beauregard to detail what measures he will take to protect the land and aquifer.
Rather than hold a public hearing, commissioners opted to have staff members review conditions that could modify a standard excavation permit.
Conditions for the gravel pit include the addition of a vegetative buffer consisting of trees that are at least four inches in diameter, as well as the implementation of periodic inspections along the roads and on-site. The permit also requires at 75 percent of the gravel extracted over the course of three years be used for road purposes.
Hours of operations will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The gravel pit will not operate on Sundays.
The permit will allow the gravel pit to operate for a total of 38 days per season.
Beauregard said operations could begin as early as next spring.
