Make safety your focus this spring

Spring is almost upon us, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) [1] is urging miners and operators to use this time to “brush up on safety procedures” as operations begin to reopen and miners head back to work to prepare equipment for the busy spring and summer seasons.

According to MSHA, nearly half (5,800) of the 12,000 metal and nonmetal mines overseen by the agency close for winter.

MSHA reminds miners that the busy season ahead is also potentially dangerous, as injuries at aggregate mines usually “climb sharply in the spring.”

The agency is urging everyone involved in mining operations to review MSHA’s safety information (particulary this page [2], the agency says) and to attend any spring safety workshops offered nearby. Workshop information is available here [3].
