Martin Marietta Materials is seeking permission to double its granite production at its quarries in Waite Park, Minnesota, St. Cloud Times reports .
The company wants to amend the permits for its Rainbow Quarry and its North Quarry, allowing an increase in production at both sites.
The current permit limits production to 1.8 million tons of salable product annually, but Martin Marietta wants to increase that amount to 3.6 million tons.
Last year, the company had to shut down the facility early because it reached its limit in October.
Martin Marietta says the increased production would not change the quarries’ footprints.
Other requested changes include an amendment that would allow Rainbow Quarry to stockpile product before it is sent to North Quarry, an amendment that would allow Rainbow Quarry to stockpile black dirt and an amendment that would clarify that signature hole shots do not count as part of the company’s one blast per quarry per day limit.
The Waite Park Planning Commission is scheduled to meet about the proposal tonight.
