Rethinking the 16-yard loader

Caterpillars’s new K-series 992 wheel loader gets a new 801-horsepower Tier 2 engine and a host of design upgrades to make it a more cost-efficient mining loader. The new engine is the same one used to power the recently introduced 993K loader, the 777F truck, and the D11T dozer. Designed to load the 70-ton Cat 775 truck in three passes or the 100-ton 777 in four or five passes, the 992K actually carries a lower breakout force and smaller payload rating than the 992G it replaces. Cat engineers say the payload reduction improves the life expectancy of the machine, and the reduction in break out force doesn’t affect cycle times in typical mining applications. For applications demanding greater breakout force and higher payloads, Cat recommends the 993K.

Among the major improvements to the 992K is Cat’s new load-sensing Positive Flow Control hydraulics. The system employs extra sensors at the hydraulic pumps to provide faster responsiveness that Cat says the operator can feel and use. The 992K also gets a new boom that includes fabricated linkage components and factory-sealed sleeve bearing pins that don’t require daily service. Also new is a modular radiator with copper fins; the efficiency of the copper fins reduces the size of the cooling package, allowing enhanced sight lines to the rear, according to Cat.

Hybrid mobile crusher

Eagle Crusher has rolled out a hybrid-powered, track-mounted impactor plant. The Hybrid Traxx features diesel electrical power for both the impactor and the plant; the tracks are driven by an open loop, single-pump hydraulic system. The plant features the new UltraMaxII 4144 impactor, which has hydraulically adjustable curtains for precise product control and reduced wear costs. The main power plant is a 325-horsepower diesel.

Adjustable triple screen

Terex Powerscreen has added the H5163 to its offerings of horizontal screens. It has been fitted with a Terex Cedarapids 16- by 5-foot, three-deck screen. It features a triple shaft adjustable mechanism that creates an elliptical screen motion, allowing the screen to be adjusted to the material being separated. The H5163 is recommended for natural and crushed aggregate, and recycled concrete and asphalt, among other applications.

Improved pump flow

The QP2H is the newest Multiquip 2-inch pump. It replaces the QP2H, offering improved performance with more flow and head. It can pump up to 158 gallons per minute with a maximum head of 115 feet.

Extends belt life inexpensively

Flexco says its new Flex-Lag Diamond Ceramic Lagging is an economical approach to extending belt life and increasing productivity while providing a reliable solution to belt slippage. Designed for use with medium-tension conveyor pulleys, it is also recommended for existing rubber lagging applications that experience high levels of wear and tear. The new product has a large ceramic tile molded into the diamond section of the lagging, providing an increased coefficient of friction. The tiles are surrounded by multiple channels for dispersement of water and renegade materials.

‘Right-sized’ stackers

McCloskey says its new “right-size” stackers deliver higher piles of material at a lower cost. The new 65St and 80St stackers have been redesigned to match the weight of each unit to its height and load requirements. As a result, the company has reduced the cost of the units, which were initially designed to withstand the most severe demands on larger equipment. Both units feature McCloskey’s patented counterweight design, which is said to yield higher material piles, adding 50 percent or more material to each stockpile.
