One quarry in Kansas has been recognized for its recent reclamation efforts.

Lecompton-based Mid-State Materials LLC has received the 2013 Governor’s Mined Land Reclamation Award for reclamation efforts [3] at its Big Springs Quarry [4], the Lawrence Journal-World reports [5].

The award recognizes companies that “achieve outstanding and exemplary achievements” in mined land reclamation and “promote the awareness and exchange of information” for reclamation, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture [6].

According to the Lawrence Journal-World report, Mid-State Materials reclaimed a 50-acre area at the quarry, completing projects such as wildlife food plots, pond construction and the reintroduction of quail. Mid-State Materials Environmental Manager Cole Andersen said the company intends “to return the land to suitable use for agriculture, recreation and wildlife habitat.”

The Lawrence Journal-World report notes that the Big Springs Quarry is one of eight owned by Mid-State Materials.
