Lee’s Summit City Council on August 15 approved a special use permit that will allow a local businessman to extract rock for 10 years at a site near Pryor Road and Interstate 470 in Missouri, according to the Lee’s Summit Journal [2].

Flip Short wants to begin quarrying rock at the site where an underground rock mine operated decades ago. Short noted that the unstable land isn’t currently suitable for building. He proposed extracting remaining rock from the mine’s ceiling before crushing and selling it.

Short said the land could later be restored for commercial or multifamily buildings.

Nearby residents have expressed concerns about damage to the land and to their homes, as well as the effects of dust and traffic. Many were also worried blasting could cause the mine’s roof to collapse.

Christine Bushyhead, a lawyer representing Short, told the residents the project would not cause problems because only 8 to 10 acres would be quarried at a time.
