One operator in Lee’s Summit, Missouri could begin mining limestone in the coming months.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has approved a permit that would allow The Family Ranch to extract limestone from a site near Pryor Road and Interstate 470 in Missouri, Lee’s Summit Journal reports [2].

A March 7 memorandum from the Land Reclamation Program recommends issuing the permit under the conditions that no blasting occurs and there are precautions in place to ensure the operation does not harm hibernating tri-colored bats, which live at the mine.

Kevin Mohammadi, staff director of the Land Reclamation Program, wrote the memorandum and is also recommending the company hire an expert to perform a geotechnical study of the area to determine how mining could affect the mine’s ceiling, according to the report.

Flip Short, who owns The Family Ranch, proposed in August [3] that the operation extract rock from the ceiling of the dormant and collapsing mine, then crush and sell the rock.

Opponents have pointed to concerns including stability of the mine, truck traffic and noise levels, according to the report.

Short said the operation would use drills and hydraulic machines rather than explosives to mine the limestone.

Short also noted that The Family Ranch is working with several engineering firms to ensure the operation won’t affect the stability of nearby homes. Short also plans to place shipping crates in the mine so the roof will only fall a few inches during mining rather than falling 12 feet to the floor of the mine.

The report also notes that Short intends to backfill the mine and add grass as the company removes the limestone.
