Screen Shot 2014-01-22 at 10.33.58 AM [1]Following a non-fatal accident involving a bulldozer that overturned on an embankment, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is offering tips for improving bulldozer safety.

According to MSHA’s report the bulldozer overturned on the embankment, rolling onto a bench below. The agency notes that low temperatures and frozen ground led to the accident.

MSHA offers these best practices for working with bulldozers:

  • Conduct adequate examinations of working areas, especially during adverse weather conditions. Additional examinations may be needed where frozen ground exists.

  • Train examiners to know the hazards of frozen ground (equipment can slide and sudden failures can occur).

  • Correct hazardous conditions before equipment is operated or ground is traveled upon.

  • Operate equipment within its design limitations.

  • Clear outslopes of large rock or stumps where track-mounted equipment will be operated.

  • Install rollover protection (ROPS) and wear seatbelts at all times.

  • Install adequate lighting on mobile equipment that operates at night or during adverse weather conditions.

  • Conduct pre-operational checks before mobile equipment is operated. Report hazards to management.

  • Maintain two-way radio communications between mobile equipment operators and all personnel in the vicinity.
