Planners in Napa County, California, have postponed the release date for the draft environmental impact report (EIR) for the Syar quarry’s proposed expansion , according to a report from the Napa Valley Register .
The planners delayed the draft EIR’s release to rework sections of the document. It was expected to be released in July.
County Planning Director Hillary Gitelman told the Napa Valley Register that there is no specific release date for the draft EIR, though the county intends to publish it soon.
Once the draft EIR is released, the public comment period can begin, followed by the production of the final EIR and then the Napa County Planning Commission’s decision on whether to grant the permit.
The draft EIR will look at the expansion’s potential impacts on aesthetics, air quality, groundwater, noise and traffic, hazards and hazardous materials, water quality, soils and more.
Syar’s proposed expansion would extend quarrying to the easternmost portions of its Napa site, requiring Skyline Park Citizens’ Association to redesign the park’s Skyline Trail. The company, which mines blue basalt, rhyolite and tuff, wants to expand so it can increase its annual production from 1 million tons of aggregate to to million tons. The permit would allow the company to operate for another 35 years.
