Mississippi isn’t likely to see an increase in the statewide gas tax anytime soon.
Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said Monday that he won’t support raising Mississippi’s 18-cent-per-gallon fuel tax, our sister site Better Roads reports .
He said although highway maintenance is vital to public safety and economic development, increasing the tax is not the best solution to funding necessary repairs.
Reeves suggested that the Mississippi Department of Transportation’s general fund appropriation should fund the state’s road work instead.
He added that he would also support a bond bill as long as it is less than $200 million.
