Articulated haul trucks meet the heavy-hauling needs of aggregates operations, but they also offer something more — maneuverability.

More horsepower/ergonomic design
Case Construction Equipment says its new 327B and 330B articulated trucks feature more horsepower, an ergonomically designed cab, and a variety of service and maintenance features. The Tier III-certified, electronically controlled 10-liter engines use unit injectors to increase the pressure of fuel entering each cylinder and feature a variable geometry turbocharger to provide an optimized air-to-fuel mixture. The fully adjustable, ergonomic cab features a long, sloping hood design and a floor-to-ceiling glass door for great visibility.
K-Tec Earthmovers Inc. says its new articulated dump truck (ADT) series is compatible with its scraper’s motor unit and allows a contractor to switch a six-wheel drive ADT between material hauler and scraper power unit in a matter of hours, depending on the model. The truck offers many advantages, including high speeds, a smooth ride, fast hydraulics, tight turning radius, perfect weight balance on all three pulling axles, better floatation than motor scrapers, and accommodation for lesser-skilled operators.
Reduced noise levels
Komatsu America Corp. says its HM400-2 articulated dump truck meets EPA Tier III emission regulations and features a hydro-pneumatic front and rear suspension, two-stage lift cylinders, reliable wet multiple-disc brake retarder, and maintenance-free oscillating hitch. The truck also has reduced ambient noise levels and lead-free radiators, as well as a 29.2-cubic-yard capacity and loading height of 9 feet, 9 inches. The company’s Komtrax technology allows machine operating information — hour meter, location, cautions, maintenance alerts, and more — to be sent to a secure Web site via wireless technology.
Increased productivity, uptime
John Deere Construction Equipment’s 250D, 300D, 350D, and 400D articulated dump trucks have been enhanced to increase productivity and uptime, according to the company. Updates include the transmission, operator station improvements, electrical enhancements, and a new engine in the 250D and 300D. The company says the truck’s best-in-class engine fuel economy and payload-to-weight ratio translate to lower daily operating costs. A new monitor provides increased diagnostic capability.
Chute allows quick material ejection
Terex Construction Americas says its 450-horsepower TA40 Generation 7TA articulated off-highway truck offers high power, high torque, and Tier III-emission certified engines for maximum performance. Its dual-slope tail chute is said to allow for complete and quick material ejection. The ergonomic cab is equipped with an air-suspended, fully adjustable operator’s seat. All Generation 7 models feature tilting cabs for unrestricted access for inspection and maintenance.
Caterpillar Inc. says its 740 articulated truck features an expanded capacity of 43.5 tons, the biggest payload of all the 40-ton size class. The truck body can handle 31.4 cubic yards of material, according to the company, and features differential locks that can be engaged and disengaged on-the-go for faster cycle times in challenging conditions and on steep grades.
Hydrema U.S., Inc. says the cab of its 922C articulated dump truck sits high on the body and has an inclined narrow hood, which provides the operator with all-around visibility. Additional features include broad mirrors for added visibility when in reverse, a climate-control system for operator comfort, and user-friendly steering and joystick controls. The truck has a 15.7-cubic-yard capacity and automatically changes pressure between cylinders while dumping on uneven ground to prevent tip over.
Suspension system offers auto-leveling, stability
Volvo Construction Equipment says its E-Series articulated hauler is the world’s first hauler to offer a suspension system with automatic leveling and stability control on all wheels, providing extraordinary off-road performance, empty or full, and allowing higher speeds for increased production. The series includes seven models ranging in capacity from the 26.5-ton A25E to the 43-ton A40E. All are equipped with Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology Tier III engines to offer high torque at low revolutions to maintain fuel efficiency and reduce noise levels, according to the company.
Low center of gravity
Doosan Moxy, a division of Doosan Infracore America, says it has implemented specific design changes to its next generation articulated dump trucks to meet the demands of today. Changes include a sloping rear frame to ensure low center of gravity, stability, and weight distribution to the front axle. According to the company, the truck’s permanent six-wheel drive provides equal power distribution, and the free-swinging rear tandem bogie and special articulation system offer excellent driving performance in difficult terrain. Models range from the 20-cubic-yard MT26 to the 38-cubic-yard MT51.
JCB offers three heavy-duty articulated dump trucks — the 714, 718, and 722. The company says they are highly maneuverable, capable of all-year-round operation, and come with the additional benefit of being able to work on ground conditions with poor load-supporting qualities. The company says the 722 (shown) features a patented front suspension system that is self-leveling and provides the operator with a smooth and comfortable ride with minimum vibration. A larger radiator has been added for warm climate operation. All models feature an electronic monitoring system, which constantly monitors the machine’s performance.
Philippi-Hagenbuch, Inc. says its patented rear-eject HiVol truck bodies for articulated off-highway haul trucks are specifically engineered for all operating conditions and the toughest applications. The automatic opening tailgate raises and lowers with ejector movement, and is operated by a single, three-stage hydraulic cylinder. A low center of gravity allows for stationary or on-the-go discharge of material. The company says its no-maintenance design increases productivity and limits downtime.
