Proposed Tippecanoe quarry faces further opposition

A proposed quarry in Tippecanoe County, Ind., near Americus is facing further opposition that could prevent the site from ever beginning operations.
County commissioners on Monday approved the first two readings of an ordinance that bans new operations if 100 residences are within a two-mile radius of the site, the Lafayette Journal & Courier reports .
Nate Hofmann, vice president of the Americus Area Community Coalition that is fighting the proposed quarry , told commissioners that 153 residential homes are located within one mile of the proposed quarry.
Rogers Group, which proposed the quarry, last month temporarily withdrew its request for a special exception. The company said it wanted to focus on addressing neighbor concerns.
The withdrawal could hurt the Rogers Group’s chances of successfully challenging the ordinance if the company decides to pursue a civil lawsuit, according to the report.
Larry Bosma, one of the site’s owners, told Lafayette Journal & Courier that the ordinance seemed like “sneaky business” because it wasn’t on the meeting agenda.
The commission is scheduled for another reading of the ordinance on July 7.
