houseofreps [1]Can a new transportation bill hit the House floor by August? Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) seems to think so.

Shuster, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said during a committee hearing on Tuesday that he wants the new transportation funding bill to go to the House floor before August recess, our sister site Better Roads reports [2].

Shuster said he wants to “get reauthorization done on time” and encouraged lawmakers to avoid passing short-term funding extensions [3]. The current bill [4] expires in September.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed told the committee he would like to see a six-year bill this time, noting that “a two-year bill is not very helpful to us.”

An increase in funding [5] was also requested, though the federal gas tax — which has traditionally funded transportation and has remained at 18.4 cents per gallon for about 20 years — received little discussion.
