Rick Feltes wins NSSGA’s 2009 Wendt Memorial Commitment Award
The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) on Feb. 17 named Richard J. (Rick) Feltes, Lafarge, AC&A Division, Eastern U.S., Elburn, Ill., as recipient of the 13th annual Barry K. Wendt Memorial Commitment Award for his dedication to the construction aggregates industry and his community at its Annual Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The award was conceived and is judged by the Manufacturing and Services Division of NSSGA, comprised of companies that manufacture and market equipment or provide services to the aggregates industry.
As a third-generation professional, Rick Feltes has made his mark on the aggregates industry in numerous ways, according to his nomination. With Feltes Sand & Gravel, now part of the Lafarge family of companies, Feltes showed vision and forward thinking, investing in high-level automation for the Elburn-based operation at a time when many small aggregate companies were still trying to grasp the benefits of such technology.
In 2005, Feltes was named NSSGA chairman of the board, a position in which he worked tirelessly to make certain that transportation funding was at the forefront of the association’s goals. In addition, while Lafarge remains one of the largest producers of aggregate materials in the U.S., Feltes also has continued to champion small producers, whom he has termed “the backbone of the association and the entire industry.”
As an active member of NSSGA who believes he can achieve more for his company and the industry through the association’s strong voice than without it, Feltes has also served as first vice chairman of the association, as well as chairman of NSSGA’s Government Affairs Division.
And it is Feltes’ unflagging dedication to the success of the AGG1 Aggregates Forum & Expo, which has enjoyed great success in its second year, that has truly shown how invaluable he is to NSSGA and the industry. Feltes, as chairman of the AGG1 Management Committee, oversaw the successful launch of the inaugural AGG1 in 2009 in Orlando, and then accepted the challenge to continue his leadership role for AGG1 2010 in Cincinnati. He helped to develop the AGG1 Academy, the education component of AGG1; the AGG1 Expo trade show; and the integration of AGG1 with the existing World of Asphalt and NSSGA Annual Convention, both co-located with the annual aggregates event.
Beyond his dedication as a producer and to NSSGA, Feltes has furthered the aggregate industry’s interests by giving his time and lending his experience to his state association. Feltes served as a director of the Board of Directors for the Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers, in which he participated on the association’s Environmental Affairs and Government Affairs committees.
Equally important to Feltes has been a spirit of giving back to the community of Elburn, 40 miles east of Chicago. Feltes has served as chairman of the Waubonsee Community College Foundation and chairman of the Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals, as well as chairman and secretary of the Kane County Republican Advisory Council.
“It is fitting that such a respected leader of our industry is honored with the Wendt Commitment Award,” said NSSGA President and CEO Joy Wilson in a written statement. “In my dozen-plus years with the association, I have personally seen Rick’s commitment to association operations conferences, political policies and technical activities. He has played an invaluable role in the success of AGG1. We are deeply thankful for his efforts at NSSGA and, undoubtedly, he has helped better not only ours, but all of the organizations in which he has become involved.”
