The Baranof Island Housing Authority (BIHA) has requested to expand its Indian River Uplands Rock Quarry in Sitka, Alaska, according to the Daily Sitka Sentinel [3].

The request to expand the site, located at the end of Yaw Drive near Indian River Road, from 18.8 acres to 36 acres went before the city’s planning commission last week, when the commission explored the possibility of a zoning amendment and a new permit for the company.

The original conditional use permit allowed BIHA to use its 18.8 acres of land for natural resource extraction and mining support facilities.

The request would change the zoning of the 17.2 acres of land adjacent to BIHA’s site from R-2 multifamily and mobile home housing to industrial. It also requires a permit request for rock extraction.

BIHA said the expansion would increase the amount of rock available for mining from 95,000 cubic yards to nearly three times that amount.

The commission is awaiting public comment before moving further.
