A proposed stone quarry near the town of Americus, Indiana is facing further opposition from nearby residents.
The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced Thursday that it approved the Rogers Group’s proposal for a quarry near Americus, according to a WLFI report .
However, the report also notes that area residents plan to continue to fight the quarry.
“We have 18 days to appeal, so we plan to appeal the decision, and go from there,” Americus resident Kay Miller told WLFI.
Residents were notified of the plan in June, and 400 petitioned for a public meeting about it.
During the crowded July meeting , Americus Area Community Coalition co-organizer Nate Hofmann said the coalition intends to appeal the decision if the quarry is approved.
WLFI reports that the DNR’s approval includes 23 conditions, most of which focus on flooding, a major concern for residents.
In a written statement, Rogers Group said it intends to educate citizens about the quarry.
Though the company has previously reached out to the Americus Area Community Coalition, it now plans to ignite discussions with Americus residents, according to a Journal and Courier report .
“We are going to hold an open house to educate folks on the group and the process we employ to better understand what we do,” Rogers Group Vice President Andy Williams said. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there and we want to make sure every one knows what the processes are.”
The permit will go to the Tippecanoe County Board of Zoning Appeals in June.
