50 years of 988 loaders
The introduction of the seventh-generation Cat 988 Wheel Loader, the 988K, marks the 50th anniversary of the 988. It will be commercially available in August. Designed as an optimum loading tool for Cat construction and mining trucks, the 988K features redesigned loader linkage, worldwide engine configurations, drive train modifications, redesigned cab, and enhancements in safety and serviceability. The loader is powered by the Cat C18 ACERT engine and is available as a Tier 4 Final version (using selective catalytic reduction to control nitrogen-oxide emissions), and as a Tier 2/Stage II version for less regulated regions. Electronic fuel control ensures optimum performance and throttle response, delivering up to 20-percent more fuel efficiency compared with the 988H. A Z-bar loader linkage expands the unit’s versatility in small quarries. The Cat impeller clutch torque converter uses a lock-up clutch, providing direct drive to boost fuel economy, trim cycle times, and reduce heat, especially in load-and-carry applications. Finally, the all-new operator station features the Cat Next Generation Vital Information Management System, which provides expanded capabilities, including fuel consumption and efficiency data.

Rapid ship loading
The Stingray Mobile Shiploader, from Superior Industries, is the company’s latest solution to help shiploading applications reduce downtime at ports and terminals. Because repositioning a ship loader’s feed point or loading hopper cuts off the material flow from loader to ship and creates downtime, the company focused on reducing the number of times a feed point needed to be moved, as well as increasing the speed of relocating the feed point. Each unit is manufactured with expanded mobility packages at both the feed-point or tail of the conveyor and at its radial or drive tires, allowing for rapid relocation from hold to hold. A slight arch to the conveyor’s structure allows it to maintain a tight clearance between the conveyor and the deck of the vessel, reducing the shiploader’s drop, which reduces dust while preserving material integrity.

Purpose-built portable impactor
Sandvik introduces its QI240 impact crusher. Suitable for recycling applications or small quarries, the portable plant was designed with mobility, productivity, transportability, minimal environmental impact, and user friendliness in mind. The machine is fitted with a pre-screen to ensure maximum scalping capability in order to prevent any undersize material passing through the impactor, thereby maximizing throughput and reducing wear costs. An underpan reduces spillage issues generally associated with impact crushers and eliminates the need for skirt rubbers. It also protects the main product conveyor from high-velocity material from the rotor. The Pri-Sec impactor features two hydraulically adjustable apron curtains that can be positioned to allow the machine to function as a primary or secondary crusher.

Mobile washing system
W.S. Tyler’s Hydro-Clean washing system is now available on a chassis for easy movement from place to place within a quarry or even from site to site. The portable unit is said to effectively clean deleterious material from aggregate, recycled, and other minerals, resulting in cleaner products with higher selling values, particularly in clay-heavy material deposits. The washing system uses up to 75 percent less water than traditional washers and 15 percent less energy. Water consumption ranges from 27 to 211 gallons per minute, depending on application and model size, compared to log washers that can require up to 800 gallons per minute. Energy usage ranges from 34 horsepower on the smallest unit to 300 horsepower on the largest.

Komatsu America Corp. introduces the WA320-7 wheel loader, which is said to lower fuel consumption by up to 10 percent compared to its predecessor, the WA3206. The unit has 165 net horsepower, is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D107E-2 engine, and is Tier 4i certified. The loader uses the Parallel Z-bar loader linkage, which offers large breakout forces for filling the bucket — with an increase in lift force of up to 10 percent compared to its predecessor. Komatsu’s SmartLoader Logic system provides optimal torque for the job, while saving fuel. A third generation hydrostatic drive train features increased pump capacity for higher efficiency and responsiveness. The machine is also equipped with the manufacturer’s EMMS (Equipment Management Monitoring System), which provides diagnostic features to improve monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities.

Remote control drill
Atlas Copco launched the FlexiROC T30 R radio remote control tophammer drill rig, which can be equipped with either a COP 1240 or COP 1640 drill for 2- to 3.5-inch holes. The standard hydraulic carousel-type rod handling system carries four 12-foot rods, for a maximum drilling depth of 57 feet. The rig comes with a Tier 4i Cummins QSB4.5 turbo charged engine providing improved diesel consumption over its predecessor, the ROC D3 RRC. Its low center of gravity and high ground clearance are said to provide mobility over the most challenging terrain, making it well suited for small- to medium-size quarrying jobs.
