Sandvik Construction introduces its new Ranger DX800 and DX680 surface top hammer drill rigs this week at ConExpo-Con/Agg 2014 in Las Vegas.
The machines, on display at the company’s booth, are among the first to bear the Ranger name in nearly a decade, says Avery Martin, business line manager for surface drills in the U.S. for Sandvik Construction.
“The Ranger name is an old family name that started in 1994 with Tamrock,” Martin says. “The name had been taken out of the service about eight years ago, and now we’ve brought it back.”
A Tier 4 Final Cat 7.1 engine delivers 225 horsepower to the DX800 and is paired with DPF technology and a common rail-type fuel injection system to increase torque while reducing RPMs, according to the company.
The machine comes standard with a HL810T rock drill that can be upgraded to a high frequency HF810T drill that offers a 10-percent increase in penetration rate compared to its predecessor.
Other improvements over its predecessor include a fuel burn rate of 1600 RPM at 5.1 gallons per hour, a nearly 3-gallon-per-hour reduction; a penetration rate that offers a lower cost per ton; and a 10-percent increase in crawling power.
The rig also features a compressor management system that reduces minimum pressure and a convex front glass that delivers a 78-decibel noise level inside the cab.
The DX800 will make its launch in the U.S. by May or June.

The DX680 is essentially a smaller version of the DX800, says Martin. The smaller rig doesn’t feature all the “bells and whistles,” such a the compressor management system, that come with the DX800, so it offers a more cost-efficient price point, he says.
The DX680 will be available in July or August.
