Shelbyville officials deny quarry request

Shelbyville’s Board of Zoning Appeals late Thursday night voted to reject the conditional use of industrial property for a rock quarry proposed by Wright Paving and Custom Stone LLC, the Shelbyville Times-Gazette reported .
The quarry would have been located on L. Fisher Road in Shelbyville, Tennessee.
Following five and a half hours of listening to experts, the Board of Zoning Appeals voted 6-1-1 that the quarry would not meet performance standards.
Among issues contributing to the rejection were blasting, noise, vibration, dust, compatibility with the area, the region not being sparsely developed, public health and safety and welfare.
However, people who support the quarry argue that a quarry is already in operation near the Wright’s property, and Shelbyville is not controlling it.
Wright Paving proposed the quarry nine years ago. Late last year, the company filed a lawsuit against the city for $10 million over issues surrounding the quarry.
