Singleton Stone awaits drainage permit decision for proposed Indiana quarry

The developer of a proposed quarry in Indiana is waiting for county officials to decide whether to grant a drainage permit.
Consultant Mike Gangstad of engineering firm Bernadin Lochmueller and Associates recommended Lake County officials deny the permit for Singleton Stone, though, as of Wednesday, officials had not yet made a decision, according to a report from the Times of Northwest Indiana .
Gangstad said the proposed quarry wouldn’t be able to ensure the integrity of local drainage systems. He questioned whether county should have to wait for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to issue an opinion about the quarry’s potential impact on nearby wetlands.
The quarry has faced opposition before. In May, two nearby farm owners challenged a 2010 zoning change that would allow the quarry to operate. The Indiana Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Singleton Stone.
Attorney James Wieser, who is representing the developer, responded to Gangstad, noting that Singleton Stone should have a chance to prove it will not negatively affect local drainage systems and waterways.
Weiser also said that IDEM doesn’t need to get involved.
The special Lake County Drainage Board will make the final decision on whether to approve or deny the permit, though no date for that decision has been set.
